The Dreaded Paper Label Should it be Used?

While paper labeling CDs and DVDs may appear to be a cost effective solution for printing on your media, there are solid reasons why you should consider other options.

1) Hand application of paper labels can be time consuming and frustrating. If not applied properly your product may not have a professional appearance.

2) The label must be in perfect alignment when placed on the disc. When the label is not positioned correctly or if it has a wrinkle in it, the disc can become unbalanced, making it unplayable on some readers. As the CD/DVD spins, the unaligned label causes the media to shake and the laser has trouble reading the data off the disc.

3) Heat is generated while CD/DVD players are in use and can also be a problem. The adhesive backing on the label can react to this heat and could start to peel off the media. The can cause an imbalance of the media as well as interference with the disc drive itself.

What are the other options for labeling disc?

1) Screen Printing ? The process of applying UV inks in a variety of patterns and colors to the lacquer surface of a CD/DVD. Volumes of 500 pieces or larger are typically best suited for screen printing.

2) Thermal Printing ? The process of applying text and graphics to the surface of a CD/DVD by means of a wax-based ribbon. This type of printing is typically utilized on smaller run jobs (below 500) that do not require complete coverage of the media?s surface.

Both screen printing and thermal printing will give your CDs/DVDs a professional look without risking damage to the media. For more information on this types of printing go to http://www.spinergymedia.com.

Mobile phones the Way Ahead!

The concept of mobile phones in itself is highly innovative. Imagine staying connected with people who matter to you at all hours of the day and irrespective of the circumstances you are in! You could be taking a cab back home from a busy day at work, when you get a call from your little daughter asking you to hurry back home. Or, maybe you are a little bit confused regarding a certain issue and want to talk the matter over with your friend. All that you need to do is to dial his number and voila, you would be getting the advice that you were in need of.

Mobile phones have thus made all our lives a whole lot easier. At present, we are used to mobile phones that are equipped with megapixel cameras, mp3 music players, video players, visual radio, fm radio and so much more. Empowered by 3g technology, some of the mobile phone handsets of today are capable of ensuring a much more fulfilling experience in mobile communications. They enable us to see our contacts and talk face to face with them in real time! At present, mobile phones are also being used to access the Internet and that too at broadband speeds.

Thus, the fact cannot be denied that mobile phones are getting smarter by the day! In the future, we could well expect our handsets to be programmed to identify our touch. The handsets of the future would include tine sensors and would be more ?intelligent?; they would be able to recognize whether it is dark or light in the areas in which they are being used. Currently, work is underway to implement many such innovative features in mobile phone handsets. Software giants such as Microsoft Corporation are leading the way in this endeavor. The future of mobiles is thus full of promise!

Windows XP: Genuine Disadvantage

Windows Geniune Advantage (WGA), Microsoft's latest antipiracy measure, is causing headaches for Windows XP users who've been good about loading the latest security patches for Windows and Internet Explorer (IE). Why? Two reasons:

(1) Initial attempts to download and use WGA may give you an erroneous error message stating that valid product keys for your genuine version of Windows XP are invalid. It's not surprising that an earlier version of WGA was hacked within 24 hours. Computer technicians everywhere were faced with another change to Windows software requiring they either troubleshoot the problem or find a way to bypass it. Thus, another hack was born. Why does WGA initially report that valid product keys are invalid? Basically, because it's encountering a problem it doesn't know how to interpret differently. The problem is:

(2) You need to re-enable ActiveX for WGA to run. ActiveX is a purely Microsoft technology that integrates interactive content on web pages, like Java applets. WGA can't run without ActiveX. Unfortunately, ActiveX has been exploited by hackers who discovered vulnerabilities in the technology and use them to run their own malicious software on your computer. As a result, one of the Windows updates you ran in the not so distant past turned off ActiveX to block this vulnerability. There's the catch: You can't run Windows Update until you validate your license with WGA which won't run until you re-enable ActiveX and lower your browser's security so you can load new security patches! Good thinking!

Microsoft's support page (in typical microspeak) does warn you that you are potentially exposing your system and that you will want to re-enable your browser's security after you help Microsoft make sure you aren't stealing Windows:

Important These steps may increase your security risk. These steps may also make your computer or your network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We recommend the process that this article describes to enable programs to operate as they are designed to, or to implement specific program capabilities. Before you make these changes, we recommend that you evaluate the risks that are associated with implementing this process in your particular environment. If you choose to implement this process, take any appropriate additional steps to help protect your system. We recommend that you use this process only if you really require this process.

Translation:

CYA We designed WGA to run off of ActiveX technology, software components we know will make your computer vulnerable to attacks because we wrote ActiveX (that's right, we created it) and left a lot of holes in it that could be exploited. Basically, you'll need to re-enable ActiveX and make your system vulnerable so that WGA will work the way we designed it to work. Then and only then can you get the latest Windows updates to make your system run, um, safer. But first we recommend that you decide for yourself that you really need to run WGA, so that you can't come back and sue us if you're computer is attacked by a virus while you're running WGA to validate your license which we also made you validate when you bought your computer, which of course came with Windows because we own 99% of the market (tee hee). But anyway, we like to see you jump through hoops and make you repeatedly prove you own it because Microsoft is antitrust. Oh, and when you're done, don't forget to make your system, um, safe again by turning on whatever you use to block ActiveX or load our cool WGA ActiveX control, which is basically just a toggle that turns ActiveX on and off whenever we feel like exposing your system to more security risks so you can load more security patches that will work until someone figures out they don't.

The earlier version of WGA was compromised and I expect that the current version will be too, if it hasn't already. As usual, tech savvy people get around measures designed to protect copyright, and less tech savvy people are left pulling out their hair trying to figure out ways to undo what Windows does for programs to operate as they are designed to. Microsoft continues to prove it needs better designers. They can't seem to get away from ActiveX although other programs do just fine without it. (Mozilla Firefox doesn't use ActiveX to enable web page interactivity. That doesn't mean it's 100% safe, but I've never had to lower security to patch Firefox.)

Microsoft needs to get rid of WGA. It's completely ridiculous to have to lower security to run patches designed to heighten security; and in this case Microsoft wants you to do that entirely for their benefit, not yours. Microsoft argues software piracy is costly for everyone and so antipiracy measures help you. That may or may not be true, but it's not the point. WGA is simply a bad antipiracy measure. It's a backdoor approach that won't stop or even slow down piracy. Both genuine and counterfeit versions of Windows will still run without the updates, which means:

  • Users who know they have a counterfeit version won't validate, won't run the updates and will still enjoy the use of Windows;
  • Users with a counterfeit version they unknowingly purchased through a disreputable OEM vendor, online auction or software pirate will simply think Windows is broken, will forego further updates, forever curse Microsoft, and possibly purchase a Mac. At any rate, very few will ever realize they have a counterfeit version and are unlikely to add to Microsoft's bloated profit margin; and
  • Licensed users with the geniune product and valid product keys will continue to have to prove ownership if they want to run needed updates and will have to expend more time and money troubleshooting what Microsoft does to protect its own interests, will forever curse Microsoft, and eventually purchase a Mac.

Antipiracy measures have to be applied at the source, not at the user end. Microsoft may achieve better results through more controlled production of its software products at the assembly line. However, the company has been greedy. When you rush to market with a product you want to make as widely available as possible, you take shortcuts. Now Microsoft is backpedaling in an attempt to recoup its perceived losses. It's being shortsighted and selfish and may well lose money in the process. By implementing WGA and other user-end antipiracy measures, Microsoft does little to affect software piracy ? and increasingly antagonizes its paying customers.

Imagine driving down the street in your car and being pulled over every other block so you can show your car title. Yes, I own it. Yes, I own it. Yes, I own it. Microsoft rolls out updates on the second Tuesday of each month as needed. So, pretty much every second Tuesday of every month you have to lower your Internet security just so you can say, yes, I own it.

What Are the iPod Video Options?

It seems that every where you look these days, someone is carrying an ipod. Either it is for listening to music or now to watch a movie! The new iPod video, which is of a convenient shirt or pocket size, has many options and some of them are absolutely surprising. Apart from the usual options of the iPod ? music player, photo viewer, and voice recorder ? the new iPod video has several options that may seem revolutionary for some people or useless for others. These options make an iPod video first of all a video playback device, photo and music device. For example, it plays music videos, even TV shows or, a remarkable initiative ? ABC hits like ?Lost? and ?Desperate Housewives?. Even Pixar shorts and popular Disney are available for the new iPod video.

The new iPod video is a refined device with refined features for the interested customers. The new video features are very well thought out and displayed on a thinner iPod. Besides, the resolution is up to 320x240, fact that may represent an advantage in an era of other handheld video options. On the other hand, the new iPod video has better volume with no static or clipping when turned up to the maximum volume. You may also connect you iPod to the home or car stereo without worrying about the quality of the sound.

Another option concerns the fact that the new iPod video has a large color screen. Besides, the display is refined, as you may see the images even in bright indoor light or in the sunlight. Another aspect regards the battery life that may last 14 hours or even 20 ? it depends on the model you choose.

The specialists suggest that the main use of the iPod video will be the short videos, funny elements taken from life. The argument for this fact is that the iPod videos are too small for being watched by too many people at the same time and require more attention than the audio programs. A possible disadvantage is the fact that many iPod videos may be used by teenagers for porn videos, fact that may help the porn industry to develop its programs and success.

Some other options may come immediately after the complete success of the presented ones. The great success may be ensured for the company and especially for this daring project without even having clear and certain proofs from the consumer market. Besides, the options on the new iPod video may be tempting for those who prefer not to mix the mobile with video options. This aspect may represent the next step in the video evolution although there are lots of skeptic opinions about these new trends in the television industry.

Another important aspect of the new options of the iPod video is the fact that you may encode video from a DVD. You may also connect the iPod video to a TV and for this operation you may need some items ? an iPod compatible video, a video capable iPod and an A/V cable. The next operations concern your skills in selecting the right options on your video iPod: you should choose video setting from the menu, then you have to adjust the video playback style you need. Another step concerns the TV signal specific for your country. Special information regards the way you plug the red, yellow and white RCA plugs: the red one into TV yellow RCA jack, the yellow into the white one and the white into the red RCA jack.

From this point on you may select on your video iPod the movie, show or video music you want to watch. You have to select the option TV on and after a status screen appeared on your iPod, the video is played back on the TV. You may also control the volume levels from the iPod volume control.

Other options regard the photo display on the TV set using the AV cable, mentioning the fact that the photos are remarkably clear an maybe a little brighter than other displays.

Barcode Labeldesign Software

Barcode label-design software is a complete solution to all your designing needs for barcode labels. A barcode label is the common way to identify a product or asset. The software designs a pattern of black lines of different thicknesses, each unique from the other. Most design software is compatible for barcode label printing applications.

Label-design software first generates a template, which is the actual format of a barcode label. Once the template is created, it is printed on a specialized paper with an adhesive surface using a printer. All barcode label-design software packages are easy to use. No programming is needed by the user.

Starting with thousands of predefined label stocks, each package guides you through label design with intuitive menus and help features. You can create labels with constant data, serial numbers, and dynamic data from text files. It is also possible to write notes that do not print and keep them in the scratch area (off of the label). Some packages allow you to link fields and enter dynamic information from the keyboard at print time.

Barcode label design software is commonly classified into two types: stand-alone menu-driven programs and barcode font programs. The menu-driven programs come with scalable fonts, graphic image import, all popular barcodes, data file import, and easy custom operator interface. A font-based program can select barcode fonts from any word processing program (such as Word, Excel, PageMaker, etc.), independent of operating systems.

Most barcode label-design software packages available on the market are easy; they enable you to integrate barcode label designing into your business processes. Choosing which one is right for you depends on how comprehensive you want to get. It is always better to use a trial version before you select your barcode label design software solution. A lot of web sites provide barcode label design software downloads.

At Last The Lost Ruins of Epson Media Information Is Revealed To All Epson Inkjet Printer Owners!

No Longer Will Life Behind Epson?s Closed Media Curtains Hide From An Epson Believer Ever Again.

How critical is it to decide on the proper inkjet paper used for my Epson printer and reap its total optimal performance?

Making the right inkjet printer paper choice can be quite an indecisive moment, yet an important one. The type of media you select will determine the overall print output quality performed.

Numerous amounts of Epson and non-Epson inkjet paper range widely between printer manufacturers and third party media companies. Some of these parties produce compatible or special coated paper to fit end users specified printing needs. The questions remains, which paper should I use when printing certain projects.

Did you know?

Epson optimizes their inkjet cartridges and paper in order to get its maximum printing potential. At the same time Epson media can be used with other printer manufacturers as well. The thing is, Epson will suggest to you themselves that it?s necessary and better to use genuine Epson paper which coincides with genuine Epson ink.

This will give you the highest output necessary based on the chemicals used both within the ink and on the surface of the paper. If you?re the rightful owner of an Epson printer you?ll know that Epson offers a money back guarantee stating their 8.5x11 media paper will work with all Epson inkjet printers.

Here is a list of some media types in which Epson is referring to;

?Epson glossy photo paper
?Epson premium bright white
?Epson double sided matte paper
?Epson photo quality inkjet paper
?Epson matte paper heavyweight
?Epson all purpose glossy paper

What kind of results will I get when using third party paper types?

The majority of third party media papers are designed to fit the specifications of Hewlett Packard inkjet printers. The reason being is because HP has such a broad printer line that most third party media manufacturers go after conquered printer markets.

Not to mention, Epson uses a completely different print technology which would result in what you would call sub-par conclusions from an Epson printer using third party Epson papers.

Third party inkjet cartridge papers are made to pair up with inkjet printers yet they are not optimized for targeted printing manufacturers such as Epson.

Don?t get me wrong, you will find good quality results with these paper types. If you want great print results, then you will have to take a step up and use Epson media paper to connect with Epson inkjet printers.

Hence, there are third party media companies who stick close to the outskirts of Epson and other parenting facilities like Ilford and Red River.

These two companies ultimately optimize their papers to meet Epson printing standards when conducting high resolution prints. You will find very good is not excellent end results. This is by chance an option for those who continue to save money of Epson paper media types.

Remember, Epson printers plus Epson ink plus Epson paper is the scientific Epson equation in order to provide you with the best Epson print quality.

It is important to know what paper will be used depending on the type of project you will most likely be printing. This is determined based on the chemicals contained inside the Epson ink cartridge.

For photos it?s highly suggested using high resolution photo quality paper to best results. If you plan on printing plain text and non-photo images then you need to consider saving the few extra cents and stick to multi-purpose paper. It will help you save on ink and paper.

Keep Your Software Simple! A Review of EditPlus

I like my software simple. If it's too complex or difficult to figure out, I don't use it.

For example, I have tried a lot of different programs for creating my web pages. These include:

  • Namo Webeditor

  • Microsoft Frontpage

  • Dreamweaver

  • NetObjects Fusion

  • Hotdog Pro

  • CoffeeCup HTML Editor

and a variety of other commercial, shareware and freeware editors. Each time I tried one of these, I found it too complicated. What are all these panels for? How to I see the underlying HTML code for my page? What's a web? How do I begin to use this package? I just couldn't get answers to my questions easily.

Now my hard disk is bulging from the growing number of HTML editors I got from download.com and then abandoned.

A couple of years ago, I discovered EditPlus. It's a very simple and easy-to-use editor. Yet is also has plenty of sophistication if you need it.

You can use EditPlus both as a text editor and as an HTML editor. This nifty piece of software has an internal preview capability so that you you get a quick check on your HTML code. It also has a spelling checker, word wrap, and a word counter. It even includes FTP functions so that you can upload your web pages to your host provider.

I wrote this article, formatted it for publication, added HTML code and published it on my web page using EditPlus.

So far, I haven't read a manual for EditPlus and don't feel I need to because the program is so intuitively easy to use.

I admit that you need to learn some HTML if you want to create and edit your web pages with EditPlus. But I get nervous when I try to create a web page with one of those designer packages where the HTML code is hidden from view.

I keep going back to EditPlus after trying those other complicated web design programs.

If you want to test it, you can download a trial of EditPlus from http://www.editplus.com. The cost of the software is minimal (only about $30) and well worth it.

Why can't more software developers follow the KISS philosophy? Keep it Simple, Stupid! I'm convinced they would capture more of us simple-minded users if they followed this principle. Then it would be Keep It Simple, Smarty!

Scrap Booking Online: Word Perfect or Corel Graphics Suite?

Scrapbooks are very popular these days. I think that almost everyone wanted to capture family histories and stories in any which way they can. And with the onset of digital technology, scrap booking has even extended to newsletters and journals with photos and illustrations online and in the email. They've become so popular that it's not surprising to receive an entire scrapbook from your relatives and friends and loved ones even across the globe.

With the advanced technology, people have been using graphic design and desktop publishing software to help them create wonderful and creative scrapbooks. Two of this well-known software is CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 12 and WordPerfect Office Suite 12.

Each of the software has their own endearing qualities. Both applications are used to create newsletters as far as I know. But what software to choose? It all depends on what you want to create.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 12

For graphically-rich family history newsletter or time capsule, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 12 would be the ideal software as it is the easiest graphics suite available in the market today.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite is a vector editing program. This software is definitely for illustration, page layout, and vector drawing. It has the Corel Photo-Paint for bitmap editing of photos and images for that professional digital imaging look. It has hundreds of clip art photos and images to choose from, which you can overlay your own family photos on top. It also has Corel R.A.V.E. 3 for motion-graphics creation.

With the software's features and vast collection of photos, clipart and fonts, you can create and design a professional-looking newsletter or a family history time capsule, and even a memorable album where you and your family will find the highlights of your life in wonderful and elegant designs made by you.

Corel's WordPerfect Office 12

And if you're the simple type, and you don't want too much clutter, you can use Corel's WordPerfect Office 12 to create a no-visual and text-based newsletter. The software has an array of newsletter templates you can use to help you start right away with your newsletter. This so far, is the best alternative to Microsoft Office.

Better yet, why not use both software to help you create your scrap book? One freelance newsletter designer who specializes in genealogy utilizes both software because the combination makes him complete his design tasks twice as fast. I can create graphics in CorelDRAW 12 and quickly pop them into all my text-based WordPerfect 12 office documents because switching between files is very easy, he relates. This is made possible by the tools in both the software that reduce the number of steps required to finish his jobs.

He adds that what makes it more worthwhile is that aside from saving time, finger movements on the mouth is also reduced, thereby reducing cramps and strains from the fingers to the wrist.

WiFi Hotspots Gaming Battle Intensifies

The city of Philadelphia in the US has recently announced some plans to implement WiFi access throughout the municipality.

This would prove fortuitous indeed for Pocket PC gamers in the vicinity.

Quality wireless multiplayer enabled PDA games, however, prove to be elusive save for real-time strategy releases like Warfare Incorporated that allow for it.

Such an initiative will quickly overcome relative WiFi indifference by Pocket PC game developers.

A wireless internet provision scale the likes of this has yet to be seen, ranging of some 135 square miles.

This will be put firmly in reach of the lower economic tiers at the low price of $10 US ($11.77 CDN at the time of this news release).

Google suddenly silenced other party bids with an offer to provide the WiFi hotspot internet service gratis albeit with commercials.

Of course, this raised the appropriate hue and cry by some myopic Congress representatives as described in the WiFi Cities Spark Hotspot Debate BBC news article.

This is on the heels of a joint McDonald's and Nintendo venture also recently announced.

This purported to offer wireless access to Nintendo DS handheld gaming console owners in the popular fast food franchises.

If you're really going to consume 24.9 grams of fat in one Big Mac sitting, you may as well burn calories with some furious Mario Kart DS and Tony Hawk's American SK8Land, the initial offerings to the Nintendo DS crowd.

I'm still waiting for more public offerings besides Starbucks and select Second Cup WiFi access for my iPAQ once I head further away from the downtown Toronto core.

Such an offering would be a socio-economic blessing to any city, making WiFi more attainable for lower social tiers.

Pending bills in Congress, we may see this come to pass. Once it does, the Palm and Pocket PC gaming market will follow.

This latest Nintendo DS initiative may be a tough act to follow for the PDA gamer crowd.

Windows Mobile 2003 served up wireless improvements to the Pocket PC operating system, but Microsoft still hasn't managed to make WiFi as simple as a McDeal.

DS owners will basically select Nintendo WiFi Connection Mode after launching the game, and they're off to the races.

Regardless of my relative disadvantage, I look forward to this if it means seeing more quality WiFi-enabled games available for my PDA.

When you buy the phone, you must first activate it. You will have to call a toll free number or go online to do this. You will enter the EMI numbers and a code and you are all set. Once you have your phone activated, you can then enter a prepaid card for airtime. You can also do this online or on the phone.

To keep adding airtime, you simply enter the card numbers into the prepaid selection on the phone. You can find the cards to be in any denomination that you want. You can get ten minutes, fifty minutes and even one hundred air time minutes for your trac phone. Of course, the more minutes you want, the more you will pay for your card.

Paying for the trac phone cards and the trac phone is still less than you would pay for a monthly service fee for a regular cell phone. You will pay less and still have all the use that you want. You can still receive phone calls and even make text messages. The only difference is that you are in control so that you do not go over your desired amount of minutes. Your phone will keep you notified of the minutes or units that you have left on the cards.

You may have to also activate cards at certain times. Most of the phones require that you activate a pre paid card at least every three months. Trac phones allow you to add airtime at any given point, however, you must do it before the allotted scheduled time or you may face disconnection. If this happens, all you have to do is reactivate your phone online or over the telephone. It is not a big ordeal and can be taken care of easily.

Having a trac phone will give you freedom and keep you in line when it comes to your spending habits. You will have the security of knowing that you can call when you need to and also know that you can add as much air time as you want to your phone. You will enjoy your phone and not having to worry about high monthly cell phone bills.

Do You Need a Doctor For Your Computer?

Over time, errors and bugs slowly creep into a computer's system, making it run slowly and badly. Its just an unfortunate fact of computer life.

What happens is, your registry software (the registry is a central database of information needed to configure your computer system for general settings and preferences, software applications, and hardware drivers and devices) gets corrupted every time you use your computer. This leads eventually to application and operating system crashes. Doesn't sound too good does it! Fortunately there are products available to address this serious issue.

In choosing a registry fix software, it needs to be both very easy to use and highly functional. Which is important. You don't want to buy registry fix software and find difficultly operating it.

Another important aspect to consider is, you don't want the registry fix software to leave your computer actually worse off than when you started. And some do, despite protestations to the contrary. So when choosing software, this is an important factor.

So, should you buy registry software for your computer? Yes, if you have been using it more than six months, or noticed a reduction in speed, or regular computer crashes or seizers. Failure to address this problem could result in a total melt down of your computer.

It is a little known but very real problem all computer users will face sooner or later.

Should Artificial Intelligent Robots Be Able to Tell Jokes?

There are obviously degrees of intelligence and if we are to call human beings, intelligent and I hear some people laughing in the background as I say this, but if we use the human brain as our model to design artificial intelligent robots then, well we have our work cut out for us.

Indeed, I would think that a higher-end artificially intelligent robot should be able to think enough to come up with its own jokes that their human companion would indeed laugh at. This subject came up recently in an online think tank when one member, Keith, while considering this subject stated;

?I couldn't disagree more. Humans expect computers and robots to respond with facts not deception, jovial or otherwise. Would you tolerate a clothes washing machine or dishwasher that said the items were clean when they were not? Or wasted your time accepting a command but not executing it, as a joke??

This of course is not what I had in mind really, but this is an interesting point indeed that Keith makes. I was more considering that as humans have companion artificial intelligent robots, android assistants, the human must bond with the artificial intelligent robot and there needs to be an attempt to keep things on a level playing field of respect. Because taking advice from a robot or artificial intelligent machine you must respect it too. And thus you need report.

Now then if your washing machine screwed you over and you could not trust it that is one thing, a negative, yet if you had to live with an artificial person, then that person would need some additional human traits above and beyond mimicking behavior. Humor is something important; comic relief makes sense. Interesting subject no doubt and perhaps you might consider this in 2006.

Mortgage Software

Every individual aspires to possess a dream house of his own, but the prohibitive prices of property that one desires to own compels one to take recourse to the often intricate procedure of mortgages, which involves borrowing money to purchase a house and paying interest on the loan. In the U.S., there has been a significant rise in the number of people mortgaging their property to obtain the required loan to own homes and property of their choices.

In the Internet era, the preferred choice of prospective buyers is to sit in the comfort of their homes and fulfill their aspirations by accessing the site of those who are experts in their relevant field. Coping with this ever-increasing surge of Internet users in this domain it has become imperative for the development of software that should cater to the basic needs of the buyers concerned.

The dispensation of loans is an intricate affair that involves keeping track of every move of a complicated, repeatedly altering origination process and at the same time dealing with a heavy rush of loans. It is natural that during the course of such a complicated procedure errors are bound to occur. Mortgage software has been developed to eliminate the scope of mistakes and to make the process more convenient for those using it as well as those processing it for the parties involved in it.

The software functions primarily on the concept of a single data source that inevitably furnishes up to date loan information throughout the system. This makes the buyers aware of the recent, most comprehensive type of the loan available. Mortgage software also enables the loan processing authorities concerned to improve their decisions on offering loans to prospective clients by enabling them to view their entire business in a complete form with the required data being automatically updated.

Mobile Computing Solutions

There are several companies that provide mobile computing solutions especially for commercial purposes. Mobile computing includes connecting several computing devices by means of wireless networking to make them accessible with each other. Hence, a person can be communicable with the office even though not physically present. This greatly improves communication and enables staff to take faster decisions, which translate into more business.

There are two main parts to company provided mobile computing equipment ? the handheld equipment and the network connection. The handheld devices used in mobile computing solutions are basically laptop computers. These laptops are connected by means of a wireless network, usually wireless LAN. Cell phones can also be integrated into the network using wireless technologies such as GSM, CDMA, WLL, GPRS, EDGE, etc.

Mobile computing solutions can be provided for specific purposes. A good example is the mail tracking system provided to the US postal department. This system can pick up, sort and route mail and then notify airport malls for their reception. This tracker can also determine late postages and apply relevant penalties on the same. Today, there are custom designed mobile computing solutions for a wide array of commercial fields such as education, business, healthcare, pharmaceutical, supply chain management, etc.

Providing mobile computing solutions does not mean just providing the equipment and the connectivity. Most mobile computing solution providers also conduct seminars in which they train users how to handle the equipment. This is highly necessary as mobile computing is still a developing field. There are also consulting services and hotline numbers provided in case of emergencies and breakdowns. In short, mobile computing does not entail just equipment; it also extends to service and management.

The cost of a mobile computing solution system depends from company to company. Some solution providers may charge for the equipment as well as the server through which the devices would be connected. This would be a bulk quote. Some providers, however, charge a bit more for the equipment and do not charge for the servers. Usually these solution providers use their servers for a host of other customers. Equipment is charged on the basis of the number of users.

American Satellite and Entertainment

The History
American Satellite and Entertainment Inc. has been founded in 1996, in the years where satellites had already been introduced, yet had plenty of aspects that needed to be developed and improved. The market was existent, yet new; it was the perfect time for a new company to enter this field, and wage war on other retailers. The area of expertise of American Satellite ranges from satellites, broadcasts, DirectTV, Satellite Internet as well as HDTV and (according to recent press releases issued by American Satellite) even GPS navigational systems. With more than 4,000 licensed and trained installers who are in turn available throughout 39 states, American Satellite has become quite a prominent giant of the satellite business. Whether they are number one or the best of the bests is not important, but we should rather focus on how reliable the service is.

Price Matching

A point that surfaces quite often when discussing about companies, retailers and everyday stores is the following: ?Will business X personally guarantee the lowest price available on the market?? The answer to this question is: ?Yes, American Satellite does match the lowest available price.? However, you should be aware that this is not as simple as walking in the store or calling them and asking them to match a price that you have seen somewhere else. American Satellites reserve the right to limit quantities or dates if the other retailer has a similar police; furthermore, American Satellite?s price matching is not valid if you found a lower price that was due to a bonus offer (nor any kind of different special offers), rebates or even typographical error. What this means is that American Satellite will only match the everyday normal price of another retailer, nothing more, nothing less.

Exclusive Deals

As of June 2006, American Satellite and Entertainment Inc. has signed a deal with another giant, which is none other than Amazon.com. The deal in question allows Amazon.com to be the exclusive online dealer for DirectTV systems. This is quite a good deal for us, the average customer as Amazon.com does have quite a good reputation toward their customers (which are estimated to be at roughly 50 million buyers who bought a single item or more.) The joint work of Amazon.com and American Satellite will undoubtedly please many, and should not be looked as a bad move.

Reward Program

With the HDTV market blooming; it is quite understandable that the battle of supremacy, the battle for the number one spot in HDTV and cable retailer is still fierce and ongoing. American Satellite has thought of a clever and overall very simplistic way of attracting even more customers; if you fill out and send a referral form to a friend, family member or neighbor, and in turn, they buy and activate their DirectTV system, you will receive 75 dollars. It is quite an easy stunt, but you can be assured that it encouraged people to talk about the service. As for the fine prints, you will only receive your $75 via checks (which take about 8 to 10 weeks to arrive) and will also be declared void if they are not cashed in the following 6 months. Obviously, you are also required to be an already existent owner of a DirectTV system via American Satellite. It is also good to mention that the offer does not limit you to a set number of referrals, as you can refer as many people as you can.

Can I Use My Computer To Get A Camera Image To The Screen Or Do I Need A Switcher?

If IMAG (a live shot on the screen) is your goal, your computer isn't up to the task. Computers always have to do something to process the signal, and a desktop is not designed to do this quickly. The result is called latency or a delay on the screen. In other words, the congregation will see someone move on stage, and then see them move on the screen ? talk about distracting! If you are going to do IMAG, we recommend going with a high-quality switcher and good cameras to ensure the best possible signal to the projector.

On the other hand, if you want to use a live camera signal going to a computer for use as a motion background, there are some worship presentation software applications that can pull this off (make sure you check, some applications can't). Doing this well depends on whether the thing you're shooting is a focal point for the congregation. You can zoom in on a candle on the platform and keep it slightly out of focus to make a nice background. Even thought latency is still an issue, most people won't notice because they aren't focusing on that candle. If the latency is a distraction, you could just set up a table with a black cloth with your candles in a small room off the sanctuary.

To set it up, you'll need a camera and computer with ports for a firewire cable. You'll also need software that can accept an external video device as a background.

Latency is the critical element you have to keep in mind. If there is any doubt whether latency will be a distraction, don't run your camera through your computer. Wait until you get the right switcher.

Once you start using video backgrounds, be aware people in the church will start asking about IMAG. Even if it's just for baby dedications or baptisms to start, it's a good idea to start planning for a switcher now.

What is a Firewall ?

Simply put it acts as a barrier between your computer and the internet. To protect you from crackers, hackers and malware.

If your running DSL or a cable modem you should employ a firewall, as having a direct connection to the Internet can make you a target to attack.

Firewalls can be hardware or software based. With firewalls you set up ACL's or Access Control lists to allow or deny traffic.

There are three different ways a firewall can block traffic.

1. Packet Filtering- Packets are analyzed against filters in the firewall rulesets. Firewalls will drop packets that are not allowed in the firewall rulesets.

2. Proxy Service- Information from the Internet is grabbed by the firewall and delivered to the requesting service thru the proxy.

3. Statefull packet inspection- looks up criteria against a database of trusted information. To see if the packet contains anything that would allow

or deny it into the network.

Firewalls are customizable allowing you to create your own rulesets you can block IP addresses, specific protocols such as Telnet, FTP, ICMP, UDP, SMTP and many others.

Firewalls can be customized to block specific ports, or even keywords.

There are many software firewalls availiable such as Tiny Firewall http://www.tinysoftware.com/home/tiny2?la=EN That is designed to keep hackers out of your network and block Spyware.

Zone Labs makes ZoneAlarm I like it bcause it has a simple interface allowing home users to configure it easily. http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

For hardware firewalls there is:

Cisco www.cisco.com There brand is called PIX firewall.

From home users I like D-Link DI-604 this is a inexpensive firewall that works well. Best of all it fits into almost any budget.

Linksys (now part of Cisco) offers a router/firewall that supports VPN and DMZ. www.linksys.com

There are many hardware solutions including setting up a firewall on a *nix box. I like this the best as it gives you the firewall administrator the most control. I personally like OpenBSD for any security applications I would run with Unix, as it is secure. There have been very few exploits against this platform.

I will be writing more articles about firewalls shortly.

Blackberry Legal Woes Impact PDA Gamers?

Things are getting a bit messier for our Pocket PC kin.

Research In Motion attempted to lift the Blackberry injunction pending a Supreme court appeal, but this request was turned down on Wednesday according to a CBC-based Blackberry news article recently released.

The lower court decision and injunction against US sales stays in place for the time being.

In keeping with the functionality convergence theme music that's been blaring in the handheld realm, Palm and RIM recently signed a licensing deal.

In essence, Palm Treo 650 smartphone owners will be able to synchronize with Blackberry servers and sync their email and calendar options using Blackberry Connect, according to eWeek.com.

If things continue in the vein, Blackberry game junkies in the US will have to turn elsewhere for their PDA game fix.

PDA gaming corporation like Magmic may have to shift their emphasis from quality Blackberry games. Perhaps Blackberry 7290 game sales will be buoyed by other sources, just not in the US.

Inevitably, Treo 650 users will tap into a portion of the Blackberry gaming market as consumers are lured by higher 320x320 resolution and non-volatile memory.

In short, PDA gamers will be assured that neglecting to charge their smartphone isn't synonymous with PDA game loss.

The tentatively titled Treo 700w remains the PDA gamer's dark horse as they've eschewed the Palm OS in favour of Windows Mobile 5.

The ever-increasing list of quality titles like Warfare Incorporated for Pocket PC are blatantly ignoring the Palm community as ports for real-time strategy gaming goodness fail to be realized.

Maybe these Pocket PC game developers know something that we don't.

I'll keep musing on this as I place my Warfare RTS game units into formation and prepare for the OMNI faction onslaught.

Free ISP?

Yes, there is such a thing as a free ISP or internet service provider. An internet service provider is a company that provides internet access, usually for a nominal fee. However, you might be surprised to find that there are Free ISP?s. If you are wondering if I am referring to the discs you receive in the mail that offer you free internet for 30 days, think again. The ISP?s I am talking about are not offering just a free trial.

So, how are these ISP?s able to offer free internet access? The answer to that will not come as a surprise. In fact, advertising is the funding source behind many free products. For instance, you can find many sites offering free MP3 downloads. However, just like the free ISP?s, these sites come with a great number of pop-up advertisements. In fact, these pop-ups can be so numerous on free internet connections offered by these ISP?s that it can become a real nuisance. It may even stall your computer and make it difficult and frustrating to surf the net.

Additionally, these free ISP?s may not offer internet, or free internet, in your area. If there is not a dialup number in your area, you may have to go without. These ISP?s may also limit the amount of time you can spend surfing the net. The amount of features that commercial ISP?s include may be lost when going with a free ISP. Most ISP?s that charge for their services are constantly coming up with new features. This is not the case with ISP?s that offer free internet services. Free ISP?s may also provide a poor quality connection with more interruptions that commercial ISP?s.

If you are looking for an ISP that is a step up from the free ISP?s, the answer might be right in front of you. You see, a lot of ISP?s that offer free internet services also have a premium package available for a low cost. In fact, offering free internet access can be a way for these ISP?s to attract customers. Once a customer sees that they enjoy using the ISP, they may decide to purchase unlimited access from them rather than their competitors.

Before accepting the terms and conditions of your ISP, always be sure you have read and understand every thing. When you are agreeing to free internet access you want to make especially sure that your ISP is truly offering the free internet access you think they are. You also want to make sure you know how much your internet time is limited to, if that is the case. You also want to look for any additional charges or long distance charges that may apply for your ISP.

7 Reasons NOT to Take Your Laptop on Holiday!

Heading off on vacation soon?

Then perhaps you're tempted to take your trusty laptop along for the trip.

After all, you bought it for its mobility, and it's nice to stay in touch via email with your family and friends back home.

However, just before you start packing, its pays to consider the downside of traveling with a laptop, particularly if you're planning to go abroad:

1. Weight

A laptop (plus accessories) starts to feel heavy very quickly. And who really needs MORE luggage to carry around?

2. Security risk

To you, it's a laptop computer. To a thief, it's a bag of easy money. (About $1000). And that bag is something you have to guard every second of your vacation.

3. Power supply problems

You'll need a different power adaptor plug for each country you visit. And depending on your laptop power supply cable, you may also need a step-up / step-down voltage transformer.

4. Connection complications

You'll need to find a way of connecting to the Internet. If your laptop is suitably equipped and you can find a local hotspot, you can take advantage of wireless Internet access.

Otherwise you're stuck with dial-up modem access, which means a choice between:

- using your existing ISP's local call number in the country you're visiting (provided your ISP has a local number! AOL and Compuserve generally do.)

- making a long-distance telephone call to your regular dial-up number back home

- signing up with a local ISP (rarely practical in the short-term)

5. Telephone socket trouble

Different countries have different types of telephone socket. If you're planning on connecting via dial-up access, you'll have to bring a suitable telephone adaptor plug.

You'll also need a digital signal tester to test for higher- voltage digital telephones lines. Otherwise you could end up frying your modem and possibly the motherboard too.

6. Extra insurance cover

It's highly unlikely your travel insurance policy extends to laptop computers. You'll therefore need to arrange separate specialist insurance cover, which isn't cheap.

7. You're on holiday!

Do you really want your office with you on vacation? Aren't you supposed to be getting away from it all?

If you're beginning to think that traveling with a laptop computer is a major logistical exercise, then you're right. (Just ask any road warrior!)

However, there IS an alternative:

An Internet Cafe.

Almost every city and large town now has several Internet cafes. To locate one when you're abroad, just ask your hotel receptionist or a friendly taxi driver.

You'll also find Internet cafes in airports, railway stations, major hotels, business centers, public libraries, and even onboard cruise ships.

Before you leave on your travels, simply ensure you can access your email via a web browser. (This is known as webmail. Most ISPs offer this option automatically - just ask them if you're unsure.)

Alternatively, set up a free webmail address (at hotmail.com or yahoo.com) for the duration of your trip and give it to anyone who might need to contact you.

With webmail set up, all you have to worry about is remembering your email login and password. Everything else - hardware, connectivity, security - is somebody else's problem.

To summarize:

Unless you have a very good reason for taking your laptop on holiday, you'd be wise to leave the darn thing at home and use an Internet cafe instead.

And who knows - maybe your laptop could use a vacation from you!

Cisco CCNA Certification: Static Routing Tutorial

In studying for your CCNA exam and preparing to earn this valuable certification, you may be tempted to spend little time studying static routing and head right for the more exciting dynamic routing protocols like RIP, EIGRP, and OSPF. This is an understandable mistake, but still a mistake. Static routing is not complicated, but it's an important topic on the CCNA exam and a valuable skill for real-world networking.

To create static routes on a Cisco router, you use the ip route command followed by the destination network, network mask, and either the next-hop IP address or the local exit interface. It's vital to keep that last part in mind - you're either configuring the IP address of the downstream router, or the interface on the local router that will serve as the exit interface.

Let's say your local router has a serial0 interface with an IP address of 200.1.1.1/30, and the downstream router that will be the next hop will receive packets on its serial1 interface with an IP address of 200.1.1.2/30. The static route will be for packets destined for the 172.10.1.0 network. Either of the following ip route statements would be correct.

R1(config)#ip route 172.10.1.0 255.255.255.0 200.1.1.2 (next-hop IP address)

OR

R1(config)#ip route 172.10.1.0 255.255.255.0 serial0 ( local exit interface)

You can also write a static route that matches only one destination. This is a host route, and has 255.255.255.255 for a mask. If the above static routes should only be used to send packets to 172.10.1.1., the following commands would do the job.

R1(config)#ip route 172.10.1.1 255.255.255.255 200.1.1.2 (next-hop IP address)

OR

R1(config)#ip route 172.10.1.1 255.255.255.255 serial0 ( local exit interface)

Finally, a default static route serves as a gateway of last resort. If there are no matches for a destination in the routing table, the default route will be used. Default routes use all zeroes for both the destination and mask, and again a next-hop IP address or local exit interface can be used.

R1(config)#ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 200.1.1.2 (next-hop IP address)

OR

R1(config)#ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 serial0 ( local exit interface)

IP route statements seem simple enough, but the details regarding the next-hop IP address, the local exit interface, default static routes, and the syntax of the command are vital for success on CCNA exam day and in the real world.

BroadbandAll About High Speed

Internet has today transformed almost every part of our life. Internet service providers are increasing day by day as more and more homes make their way towards getting Internet access. Whenever we talk about high-speed Internet connection, broadband comes to our mind. It is an Internet connection that runs at 256kbps or at 512kbps or even faster. The term ?broadband? can be defined as a A class of communication channel capable of supporting a wide range of frequencies, typically from audio up to video frequencies?.

From the time of Internet?s advent, people began demanding faster data transmission. In the past, there were only dialup connections, which could transfer up to 56kbps of data and that too with the help of a high-speed modem. So, to keep up with the average person's demand for Internet speed, broadband was invented. It not only carries a wider range and type of frequencies but also helps in a faster data transmission. With broadband, you can download audio and video files within seconds. It is much faster than a dialup connection and thus enables you to use the Internet faster and more efficiently.

As the demand for broadband continues to increase year on year, so do the number of broadband providers and this leads to increased competition. The increasing significance of Internet in people?s lives has given rise to the expansion in broadband products and services. In the competitive environment of broadband, providers are dropping prices, giving attractive offers and offering incentives to retain customers.

Finding the best broadband provider may become an easy task if a little effort is made in that direction. Firstly, give a thought as to what you really need from a provider and for how much time do you access the Internet. Decide if you need only the Internet service or the bundled phone and Internet service. List your needs according to your personal or business needs. Compare prices of different broadband providers; compare the offers by different broadband providers and their services.

With excellent deals on offer, broadband is now becoming more affordable for the average consumer. The future sees Internet leaving a mark by its presence in each person?s mind and replacing televisions, radios, and telephones. So make use of this great Internet experience provided by broadband.

Putting The Boomers Out To Pasture

The Baby Boomers will be more remembered for the problems they left behind as opposed to anything they accomplished during their tenure.
- Bryce's Law

As we all know, the Baby Boomers are regarded as those people born following World War II, I believe it is from 1945 to 1960. This generation has seen a lot: the space race, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the USSR, and eleven U.S. Presidents, just to mention a few. In the area of Information Technology, they actively participated in the transition from mainframes to client/server computing, the Internet, and an unprecedented number of technological developments, including cell phones, cable, video enhancements, etc. They were there during the MIS movement of the 1960's and 1970's, they helped invent the packaged software industry, and spearheaded e-commerce.

As they are entering their 60's, the Boomers are now approaching retirement, and we are already seeing them rapidly fade from view in I.T. departments. For example, I.T. is now considered a young person's game dominated by workers in their 20's and the manager (the old man) in his early to mid 30's. In contrast, Boomers are now generally regarded as dinosaurs who are slowly being put out to pasture. They haven't completely left yet as they still possess valuable knowledge about legacy systems and are blessed with certain skills required to maintain such systems, e.g., Systems Analysis, Technical Writing, COBOL, ISPF, CICS, TSO, IMS, ROSCOE, MVS, etc. They are hardened veterans who still enjoy their work but are growing weary of the changes in the corporate landscape, such as short-term planning, outsourcing, and the development of disjointed systems by the spirited younger workers. Inevitably, the Boomers are often asked to clean up the mess left behind by such projects.

The transition from the Greatest Generation to the Baby Boomers in I.T. was relatively smooth, with the veterans mentoring the Boomers and guiding them on their path towards succession. However, the transition from the Boomers to Generation X (those born between 1965-1976), Generation Y (1977-1994), and Generation Z (those thereafter) has been much more turbulent. I attribute this to three reasons:

1. The change from mainframe to PC based computing - the technologies were perceived as dramatically different and, as such, companies left one set of workers behind to tend to the mainframes, and hired a new generation oriented to the PC's. Regrettably, there was little common ground between the two. Whereas the two groups should have been working together all along, a polarization of the two groups ensued instead.

2. Changing socioeconomic conditions which affected family dynamics, such as having both husband and wife working full-time jobs and letting family responsibilities slip through the cracks. This led to changes in our morality and other cultural differences whereby the younger generation doesn't have the same set of interests or priorities as the Boomers.

3. An increasingly competitive global economy which has forced a change in the pace and priorities of business.

This has all resulted in several changes in orientation and perspective. For example, instead of long-term planning, quick and dirty solutions are now considered the norm; e.g., if something cannot be done in 30 - 90 days, its not worth doing. This emphasis on speed versus craftsmanship has led to questionable quality, poor service, and repetition in work effort (which is why systems and software produced today are considered disposable). These changes in orientation also created a spirit of competition as opposed to cooperation, independence as opposed to teamwork, and a decline in corporate loyalty. Such attitudes are not limited to I.T., and can be found throughout a business as well as our society in general.

So what will be the Boomers' legacy? A rise or fall in our standard of living? Viet Nam or the war on terror? Our growing dependency on foreign oil? Our fascination with gadgets? What?

Frankly, I believe their legacy will be the generation gap they helped create. I consider this rather ironic since they liked to grouse about the gap between their fathers and themselves. But the Greatest Generation did a better job of transferring the reigns of power than the Boomers ever did. The divisiveness between the Boomers and Generation X/Y/Z is so substantial, that even if the Boomers tried to coach or mentor, Gen X/Y/Z probably wouldn't heed their advice. This has led to a major hiccup in the transference of management and systems knowledge. Consequently, Gen X/Y/Z is much more reactive as opposed to proactive in their management style, which will be felt for years to come. How many 9-11's or Hurricane Katrina's do we need to suffer through before we learn how to plan and adapt to changing times? For example, the patchwork systems being implemented by companies today will inevitably lead them to lose their competitive edge tomorrow. Executives are only now beginning to realize how weak their corporate systems are and how ineffective their companies will be in the years ahead. This is what has triggered the latest attempts to reinvent systems theory, but I fear it is too little, too late.

So, as the Boomers begin to ride off into the sunset, do we thank them for their efforts or do we open an express lane for them?

HDTV: Like Looking Out An Open Window

Have you ever watched a movie on a regular TV set, and then watched the same movie on an HDTV? If so, you would have noticed a huge difference! On the HDTV viewing, you see and notice things you've never seen before, even if you've seen the same movie several times! The colors are brighter, backgrounds are clearer, and details are better defined. HDTV is like looking out an open window, whereas in comparison, standard TV is almost like looking through a glass soda bottle. Because of CRT (cathode ray tube) technology, TV is often referred to as the tube. After watching HDTV, watching standard TV is almost like trying to view through one!

HDTV, or High Definition Television, offers precision sound, original film quality picture resolution, and a wider, better detailed panoramic view. This is made possible by the use of true digital signal which is transmitted via satellite or cable directly to your unit. You'll notice that not only does HDTV offer extraordinary picture clarity and sound, but the scope of the picture just like watching a movie on the big screen, inside a real movie theater!

The use of digital signal is what separates HDTV from your common television set. The reason why there is such a notable difference between the two is that conventional televisions operate on analog signal. Digital signals are much faster, meaning images are is refreshed more rapidly, therefore providing superb picture resolution. Analog signals are much slower. As a result, the images produced by a television using this type of signal are of low resolution. Simply put, the picture is just not as sharp and view is restricted.

Not only do HDTV's offer superb picture quality, but HD sound is second to none. This is because Dolby Digital surround sound comes standard with HDTV. So, not only does watching an HDTV remind you of a movie theater, it also has the sound system to further enhance the experience.

Along with better quality picture and sound, HDTV's are quite easily integrated with your computer. They are able to easily communicate directly with one another through the use of a type of data compression software such as MPEG-2. Once this software is successfully installed, a whole new world of multimedia technology is literally at your fingertips! For instance, CD-R applications can be transmitted to an HDTV, as well as HDTV programs can be downloaded onto your computer. Either way, the picture resolution is top notch and the signal is stable.

Lastly, HDTV's are more affordable than one might assume. There are many different ways to buy or finance an HDTV system. Some companies offer money-saving offers both in-store and online. Some of these include rebate programs; others include special deals, extra gifts or incentive packages offering items such as hundreds of dollars in gift cards. There are both in-store and online promotions as well as savings with shipping and delivery. Bottom line, HDTV is affordable for almost any budget and well worth every penny!

The Global Village Never Sleeps

The Internet is like New York, a city that never sleeps, except for the fact that it is not actually a city. The Web?s ?anytime? nature is a boon for people who want to talk to someone at 4 am such as anyone who is doing shift work. Before the Internet, if you finished work at 4 am, the only people awake were other shift workers such as your co-workers. The only people you could unwind with after work were the co-workers you probably wanted to get away from. Your only company were the people you were most likely to want to complain about to some understanding third party.

Thanks to the Internet shift workers can go into a chat room at any time and talk to people about their day. Some of these people will be in other time zones where everyone has just finished work and won?t think twice about anyone who has just gotten home. The rest of the chat room will at least be used to people in other time zones on different schedules. This creates the interesting possibility of a shift worker establishing a friendship with someone a few streets away, who assumes their new friend who works from 10 pm until 4 am must be in another country.

This ?anytime? aspect also helps insomniacs. When you can?t sleep you can jump on the Internet and talk to people to get your mind off whatever it is that?s keeping you awake. If you are lucky you can talk out your problem online with a bunch of anonymous strangers. Then you can go back to bed and straight to sleep. My advice for when you can?t sleep is to avoid lying in bed and dwelling on the time slowly passing, worried that you will never sleep again. Better to get up and do something, to make yourself even more tired so you can get to sleep.

Not only does the Internet let you talk to people twenty four hours a day, but you can find people with similar interests anytime. My brother-in-law Brad is currently obsessed with a board game called Stratego. It is my brother?s fault for showing him this dice-less board game. My brother has since lost interest in the game and Brad was having trouble finding some to play against him. Brad doesn?t seem interested in any of the games the rest of us want to play, especially not if they involve dice. Luckily, Brad discovered he could play Stratego online and play against real people all day and all night, which according to his wife is exactly what he has been doing since discovering the online version of the game. So from her perspective, maybe there is a downside to him being able to play his favourite game with someone, somewhere, anytime.

Creating A Solid Cellular Phone Business Plan

Everyone who has looked around recently knows how incredibly popular cell phones are. These days it seems that everyone, from the youngest child to the oldest grandparent, has a cell phone to their ear in just about every situation.

Cell phones have become ubiquitous in our society, and this means that there are many opportunities for those who sell these phones and provide the services that keep them going.

==A Solid Business Plan Is Essential To Getting Any Business Off The Ground==

For those considering a business opportunity in the cell phone arena, however, it is important to create a cellular phone business plan before you sell or service your first phone. A solid business plan is essential to getting any business off the ground, and the cell phone business is certainly no exception.

==Things To Include In Your Cellular Phone Business Plan==

A quality cellular phone business plan should include at a minimum what part of the cell phone business you plan to focus on (sales, service, support, etc.).

The business plan should also detail where you plan to operate your business. Many of those in the cell phone business choose to rent space in a local mall, so you will need to know how much it will cost to rent the space you need for your business.

It can be quite costly to rent space in a metropolitan area mall, so it is important for your cellular phone business plan to detail just what you need in terms of startup costs and ongoing operational expenses.

==The Taxes And Structuring Your Business==

Of course the usefulness of a cellular phone business plan goes far beyond raising the startup capital and ongoing funds you need. A quality business plan will also be a valuable tool when it comes time to prepare for your taxes and structure your business properly.

How you structure your business is essential to its ultimate success. For instance, it is important to structure your business properly in order to limit your personal liability and reduce your taxes.

==Using Professionals To Help You Structure Your Business==

When using your business plan for this purpose, however, it is important to have it reviewed by a competent tax attorney or business attorney. These professionals can help you structure your cellular phone business plan in a way that will be most helpful to you and your new business venture.

Voice Changer Software Perfects Your Educational Projects

If you are a teacher or a professor, obviously you will be vexed when one student gives a sneaky yawn in your class. Don?t hastily blame him but think twice about your lecture: may it lack a small fire of passion and creativeness?

If you are a student, you cannot wait to become a Jack Black?s pet in ?School of Rock? as you can memorize a mathematical formula by a song and get A mark not because of any force but your true love.

All is about new pedagogy.

No student wants to listen to a rambling speech and many teachers try to add some games, small contests, etc. into the lessons with the hope that their class becomes more vivid. However, this world seems to be not enough without the wise recognition of the new technology?s usage.

Voice changer software (VCS) is one of the modern tools which can perfect your educational audio projects. With the function of a recorder, MP3 player and especially voice changer and voice simulator, VCS can support you to prepare lesson plans. Imagine that in your literature class, you don?t need to finger-point at any student to ask him/her to read an extract of Romeo and Juliet but turn your recorded file on. Your multi-voices in multi-characters will bring an enjoyable feeling to your students as they can live in a real world of Shakespeare and all characters? accents sound like in the 16th century.

VCS is also a useful teaching aid for any music teacher. With a bit creativeness, you can morph music, edit melody, add effect and so on to make all your students goggle with an interesting mixed CD of their favorites.

The list of those benefits can be much longer, but it is up to your own pedagogy. Simply visit http://www.audio4fun.com or use the phrase ?voice changer software? in Google search engine to find more information. You can do all, but remember that your students are future?s seeds, so your educational projects must be from the needs of them.

RFID: Blink!

JP Morgan Chase & Co. will begin issuing contactless blink cards to millions of MasterCard and Visa credit cardholders next month.

A blink card looks like a regular credit card, but is embedded with an RFID chip that allows the bearer to wave the card at an RFID-enabled terminal rather than swipe it or hand it to a cashier.

If you already wave cards at toll collection booths and gas station pumps, the blink card may be an easy transition for you. I envy you that. I have yet to find anything about RFID that is an easy transition for me.

I'm actually less concerned about the security of blink cards than I am about many other RFID applications. The selected interface protocol supports a read range of only a few inches, so any would-be identity pirate would have to be stationed between my hand and the reader in order to steal my information. I'm confident that even if I'm temporarily overwhelmed by the joy of saving ten seconds during checkout, I would notice them there.

Chase's initial plan is to link blink cards only to credit card accounts, not debit or bank cards. I don't know if this decision is motivated by consumer interest or Chase's self-interest. Either way, it provides a layer of personal security. If a crafty digital thief does manage to slip in when I'm blinking, they will be plundering my Chase credit card account, not my personal bank account.

The June fleet of blink cards is slated for Chase account members in two undisclosed cities. Chase is keeping the undisclosed target cities undisclosed for undisclosed reasons.

I can't help but note that Merriam-Webster defines blink as:

1 to look with half-shut eyes
2 to shine dimly or intermittently
3 to look with too little concern

Laptops Options: Research Review Discover and Save

So you want to buy a laptop. You?ve browsed the Internet for hours, read laptop reviews, compared prices, printed reams of information, or at least created a folder full of new bookmarks. What did you get so far? Overwhelmed, a window on your screen telling you your printer ink is low and a flashing message on your printer telling you it?s out of paper! You then go through all that printed matter, reading it again and highlighting the important parts. Or, call up that bookmark folder and click, click, click and click again. Think you?re any closer to making a decision?

Searching the Internet for information on the best laptops for my needs revealed some very interesting discoveries. Before purchasing my notebook, I want to be informed and educated, armed with facts and figures prior to my purchase. By reading many laptops reviews I gleaned much information that was not only useful, but some of the discoveries can actually save money.

If you?ve read one, you?ve probably read five articles on how to buy a laptop. They?ll all give you the most important points to consider: A quick review here:

What will you use it for?
Size (dependent upon what you will use it for).
Hard Drive: Preinstalled software takes up space. Make sure there?s enough actual hard drive for your storage space.
Processor: For processing applications, the higher the number, the faster the speed. RAM: It runs the applications and data on your operating system (i.e., Windows XP or Mac OSX) Connectivity: Wireless and plugins. Check before you buy.
Battery Life: 2-3 hours is common. Remember, the bigger the notebook, the lower the battery life. Portability: Remember, the larger the notebook, the heavier.
Accessories: Docking stations, extra battery, carrying case. You might want to include some of these in your budget.
Price: Shop and compare. Don?t shy away from the little guy either. They have good deals too. Chances are he cares more about you than the giants do.
You now have the checklist in hand. Great, you?ve done your homework. But somehow it feels like you?re on a scavenger hunt! Everything on that checklist has to go into just one laptop! Fear not. It?s not that hard. In fact, it?s fun and exciting when your choices are revealed. And here?s where the amazing discoveries are found.

Go to a laptop comparison site. I like the HP website. Here?s what you will discover. Intel Pentium M is a standard in many of the most popular laptops, even in the cheap notebooks. AMD, by comparison, is also worth your consideration. Memory: You?ll be amazed at how many laptops come already equipped with 512MB. Hard Drive: 40GB seems pretty standard, and adequate for most. CD/DVD burner: you probably should get it, even if it raises the price a little. Video Graphics Card: The standard graphics chip for Pentium M is pretty sufficient for most users. Battery: Expect the standard 4-cell Lithium ion, 2 hours battery life. Warranty: One year is sufficient. Price/Deal: You don?t have to exclude the small dealers. Your warranties and tech support will come from the manufacturer, not the seller.

In summary, buying a laptop is not all that difficult, even if you don?t know much about them. A little browsing and you?re sure to find all your specifications neatly packaged in one great notebook at the price you are comfortable with. You don?t have to customize, there?s one already out there for you. And you don?t have to stick to one brand to get the features you need. In fact, you?ll see that different brands have the same features. So choose the one with the best deal and SAVE. But do the homework ? hindsight always has 20/20 vision!

Quick System Restore with ASR Backups

ASR (Automated System Recovery) is a feature available on the Windows XP Pro and Windows Server 2003 operating systems for quick and efficient system backup and restore.

Typically, the restore process involves reinstalling the operating system and configuring all physical storage to their original settings before restoring data and settings. Rebuilding the system in this way is a time-consuming and often problematic task, causing many headaches for administrators and technical staff.

ASR significantly automates the process of rebuilding the system, thus allowing you to fully restore your system quickly and efficiently in the event of an emergency or complete system failure, even to a bare computer with no software installed.

ASR backups are written to a backup medium, such as tape, which can then be used to restore the system to its prior state. Also required is a floppy disk, which is inserted when the ASR Wizard is run.

To restore, the Windows Installation CD is used to boot up the machine. The ASR floppy disk is inserted, and the ASR restore process commences. The process is completely automated, and the system is restored without further intervention.

ASR backups are a crucial part of your backup plan that will save you both time and money. If you perform an ASR backup each month or when making major system changes, you'll be able to restore the system easily when the need arises.

Linus Chang is a backup expert and the lead developer of BackupAssist -- tape backup software that is simple and affordable, and perfect for small and medium businesses. Protect your Windows servers, including SQL Server and Exchange Server, to tape, REV drive, hard drive, NAS and more, at a fraction of the cost of other backup software.
