Take Advantage of Cell Phone Family Plans

If credit cards have supplementary cardholders who can share the credit limit, cellular phone plans also offer shared plans more commonly known as family plans. This type of plan offers the sweet promise of value for money for as small an amount as $10 to $20 more per month that a single subscriber is used to shell out.

The value lies in providing two lines of cellular service combined with the newest cellular phone deals usually offered for free. Other freebies include cellular phone accessories such as belt clip, hands free headset, in-car chargers and more. Cash back rebate incentive programs are also offered. Since these usually have to be claimed by a specific date, it is always advised to review the rebate information.

Basically, the allotted minute allowances are shared between the subscribers. However, modifications on this notion have been introduced by companies. This is the reason why it is important to read the details of the family plans offered very carefully.

There are five leading cellular companies that offer family plans, namely, Verizon's Family Share, Cingular's FamilyTalk, Sprint's PCS Family, T-Mobile's Family Time and Nextel's Team Share.

Verizon has the unlimited Night and Weekend home airtime minutes when calling a cellular phone that is also on the Verizon Wireless Network. Night hours start at 9:01 PM to 5:59 AM on Weekdays. On Weekends, it starts at 12:00AM Saturday to 11:59PM Sunday.

Cingular offers Rollover Minutes. This refers to the buildup of unused minutes which can be used on the following months. This expires after a year. This is a great deal because it is often difficult to track the number of minutes consumed in a month. Rollover minutes will certainly maximize the value of money spent because the unused time can still be consumed within a year.

Sprint has the capability to take advantage of its nationwide fiber optic network through the PCS Fair & Flexible America. Long distance calls are free when the calls are made on its nationwide PCS network. It is always a drawback on the budget to incur long distance charges. This offer is very convenient for business people who are always traveling.

T-Mobile has the Nationwide Digital Roaming. This prevents the consumer from obtaining expensive roaming charges on calls within its national coverage network. Calls between T-Mobile to T-Mobile have unlimited minutes and doesn't consume the family monthly allotted minutes. This is a very sweet offer because on top of the monthly minutes that can be made on calls on other networks, one can certainly take advantage of the unlimited minutes for calls that need more time for idle talk without being pressured to cut talk time because of expenses.

Nextel also offers Free Nights and Weekends. This corresponds to Mondays to Fridays at 9:00 PM to 6:59 AM and Fridays at 9:00 PM until Monday at 6:59 AM. The Group Connect service links a group of up to 25 people on a single call without consuming the allotted cellular allowance for the month. This is similar to having a conference real-time without expending the allotted time.

It is always wise to review the details of the plans offered by such companies before availing of one. The only setback of such plans, especially those that offer rebates and free cellular units, is that one may be tied up to a year or two contracts which are difficult to disregard as easily

Why Should You Worry About A Malicious Code?

A malicious code can be a program. It can also be a part of a program. Further a malicious code can attach itself to a good program. In that way the malicious effect occurs first when the good program runs.

The last time you installed a large software, let us say a photo program, you just executed one command, for instance INSTALL or SETUP. After that the installation program took control, creating and deleting files. A few minutes later you have a lot of new code and data installed. You had really no idea of what you had received. Hopefully all you received was good and may be it was. But think for a minute of all the millions of byte that were transferred and all the modifications that were made to the existing files. And all this was going on without your consent or knowledge.

A malicious code can do anything other program can. It can write a message on the computer screen, erase a stored file or stop a running program. Malicious codes can do different things every time. They can also do nothing most of the time and then suddenly act in a very dramatic way.

What is a malicious code? How is it possible that it can take control of a system? How can you recognize a malicious code? Is it possible to stop it? Let me try to give you some answers.

A malicious code is an undesired effect in a program or in a part of a program, caused by an agent intent on damage. A virus is a program that can pass on a malicious code to other good programs by modifying them. A virus ?infects? a program by attaching itself to the program. Then the virus destroys the other program or it exists with it. Also the good program can be modified. It then acts like a virus and starts to infect other programs. A transient virus acts when the attached program runs and terminates when the attached program stops. A resident virus locates itself in the memory of the computer and can remain active even if the attached program stops.

A Trojan horse is a malicious code that besides its primary effect even has a non obvious effect. It can for example take the identification and password of a user, passes the identifi-cation information on to the rest of the system, but keeps a copy of the information for later use.

A logic bomb is a type of malicious code that goes off when a certain condition happens. A time bomb is a logic bomb, where the trigger is a time or date.

A worm is a malicious code that spreads copies of itself through a network. The difference between a worm and a virus is that a worm operates through a network and a virus is spread through a medium, usually a copied program or data files.

The only way to prevent an infection by virus is to avoid sharing an executable code with an infected source. Of course you cannot know which sources are infected, the best advice I can give you is to expect that any outside source is infected. The problem is that you cannot cut out all contact with the outside world. However there are some techniques to obtain a fairly safe community for your contact with the outside world.

1.Use only commercial software from established vendors 2.Test all new software on an isolated computer 3.Made a bootable disc and store it on a safe place 4.Make backup copies of executable system files 5.Use virus scanners regularly

You can never be quite safe for a malicious code, but at least you have a good chance to diminish the harm if you follow these fairly simple rules.

Hardware Inside Xbox3 Reviewed and Explained

Gaming has reached new levels with newer and meaner machines coming into the market. The Xbox 360, PSP3, and Wii are all set to fulfill gaming dreams. What makes a console powerful and state-of-art is its hardware.

The Xbox 360 has a 20GB hard drive; wireless controllers; headset; DVD remote; Ethernet cable; AV cables; and external power supply.

?Inside the mean gaming machine, the Xbox 360 is a powerful computer. The Xbox 360 harbors a customized IBM Power PC CPU with three processing cores with 3.2 GHz power. The system has a 3.2 GHz tri-core PowerPC based CPU and a 500 MHZ GPU.

?The ATI graphics processor has a capacity of 500 million triangles per second. It has a chip, Xenos, designed by ATI. This raises the 3D effects and graphics to astounding levels of clarity and definition. The X box 360 is said to have a 16 giga samples p/s fill rate along with 4X antialiasing and 48 billion shader operations per second and a9 billion dot product operations per second. The specifications are breathtaking and according to the CNET editors review, ? it is hard to compare or comment on a machine with futuristic capabilities and one that is yet to have a comparison.? What the Xbox 360 will have is realistic graphics.

?The memory system is GenX and has a 512 MB of 700 megahertz GDDR3 RAM on a 128-bit bus. The system has a unified memory architecture which is shared by the CPU and GPU.

?The bandwidth is high and is utilized for z-buffering, alpha blending, and antialiasing. The system is designed to be efficient and save time and space on the GPU die.

?The Xbox 360 has a six channel Dolby Digital surround sound. The sound files are encoded and an MPEG-2 decoder is included in the DVD video playback. The voice communication is handled by the console and allows cross-game communications. The system is sophisticated and has no voice echo.

The CNET Editor?s review has awarded the Xbox 360 a rating of 8.4 /10. According to the reviewers the Xbox360 will support high definition gaming. The Xbox 360, a gaming console developed by Microsoft is user-friendly and sturdy in design. The system offers downloads, communications, and excellent gaming opportunities. A GenX media hub the Xbox 360 allows playing of DVDs, CDs, TV shows, and games. It has the power and performance of a high-end gaming console which includes great networking. What is negative about the X box 360 is that it has a few design flaws that need ironing out. The power supply is oversized, the fan noisy, there is no inbuilt wireless networking, no DVI or HDMI output, a substandard DVD player, and no suitable storage for high definition content.

Opinions on the Xbox 360 are widely divided. A firm consensus can only be reached twelve months or so after the release when gamers and developers world wide begin using the console and discover the flaws and hidden facets.

How Do I Recover Deleted Files Documents and Folders

We sometimes accidentally or purposely deleted our files and documents in our computer. And then you later realized you need it back and want it recovered. Now you start panicking on how to recover these files. I really understand when you are not too computer savvy or I must say, not too computer ?literate? to deal with this kind of problem.

Well, there is always help. I will show you simple steps on how to recover these files. Have you noticed an icon located on your desktop screen (that is the main screen that you see when all programs on the task bar are closed) that looks like a garbage bin? This is actually called the recycle bin.

What happens is that, if you delete your files, it does not actually get deleted from the computer. It goes to this bin called recycle bin. Not unless you permanently delete it, you can only do this manually. But ofcourse there is always an option that you don?t have to delete it manually. You can also set it up to delete files right away without moving them to the recycle bin. I suggest you don?t choose this option though.

By knowing if your recycle bin is not set to remove files immediately when deleted, do the following:

(1) Point the mouse to the recycle bin icon
(2) Right Click the mouse
(3) Click on Properties
(4) On the Global tab, make sure the Do not move files to Recycle Bin is unchecked.

To recover your files or your documents, do the following:

(1) Double Click your recycle bin icon from the desktop
(2) It should show you the list of files that has been deleted and has been moved to the recycle bin
(3) Point your mouse to the file or document that you want to restore, then right click your mouse (press the right click of the mouse)
(4) Click on restore

You should see your file from where it was saved before it was deleted. For example, if the file was originally saved on a folder named ?personal file folder?, the file you just recovered and restored is moved back to that folder. That way, you don?t have to locate the file after restoring it.

Here is the worse scenario, what if you had emptied the recycle bin?. So what are now your chances to recover these files?

The good news is, those files are actually still on your hard drive and is occupying a space. Now, there is a freeware (meaning it is absolutely free!) called Restoration. You can find this freeware by searching from many search engines on the internet. This is a utility used to possibly restore and undelete your files.

What Is ReverseEngineering

Reverse-engineering is a term that is used for the process of taking apart something to figure out how to use it, basically. In many cases, something new and great has come about. In order to understand how it works or to recreate it, engineers will pull it apart and study it. Understanding how it works is one thing. But in order to recreate it, they will have to make it different somehow. This can be challenging but is often necessary. Reverse-engineering is quite a fantastic, but worrisome way to learn new things.

The task that is difficult in reverse-engineering is the task of making what is in such a way that it will no longer be the same. The fear that is involved has to do with the fact that patent information can be quite sensitive. Copying a product that is under a patent is highly illegal. But, if they can figure out how to use it and make it in a different method, it may fall into the gray area. What is important to remember, though, is that the patent is on the functionality of a product, not necessary on the way it is designed.

Reverse-engineering is something that has happened the most often by the military. In this case, the reverse-engineering will be used to copy other nation?s technology when it comes to military endeavors. In many cases, the information is obtained by intelligence operations. Reverse-engineering was most commonly used in the Cold War and World War II.

You will find that reverse engineering also happens as a result of curiosity; seeing if they can do it, so to speak. It is also used as a means of cracking the code of security measures and finding a way to get around the security restrictions that can be found in such things as software and electronics. It is quite possibly quite illegal to do these things though and this needs to be taken into consideration.

Swap Magic Brings Welcome Magic for Legal Responsible PS2 Disc Owners

I first heard of Swap Magic was when I was busy solving eerie mysteries and killing grotesque looking creatures in Silent Hill 4. I admit it--I am a Playstation 2 fanatic. I have somehow acquired this addiction from my cousin who always includes me in his long hours of playing PS2, from racing games to Role Playing Games (RPGs). During one of my mystery packed game session of SH 4 The Room, my cousin suddenly came out of nowhere and excitedly started talking about the Swap Magic for Playstation 2. One of the most annoying problems faced by PS2 players is that the PS2 console won't allow users to play imported game CD titles and back up copies of legally obtained titles. Many PS2 gamers find themselves out of luck when, after shelling out big bucks for a legal copy, their legal copy becomes scratched or unusable. To add insult to injury, many titles sell out quickly or go out of print, responsible law abiding PS2 players once again find themselves in a bind. Swap Magic solves these problems.

Swap Magic, which comes bundled with a in CD and DVD format disc, allows every PS2 fan to use or play imported or backed-up games on their Playstation 2. Imported game titles include both foreign translations of US titles or games published by foreign publishers. Backed-up games are Playstation 2 games legally copied by individual game disc owners for back up or archival purposes. Legal disc owners usually back up their libraries to protect against accidents or damage to the original discs they normally use. Swap Magic poses a major advance for PS2 gamers. Not only does it allow once to play archived and imported copies, it is extremely easy to use. You only need to boot your PS2 with the disc. After boot up, you swap it with imported or backed-up game discs. The Swap Magic comes with a Swap Tool which is included with every package, to enable you to swap your games effortlessly.

Just why would a gamer be interested in import games? That?s a very good question, and one I just love to talk about. Most of the hottest and rarest games often come out for the Japanese market or the Asian and European markets. If you?re looking for the coolest puzzle game, you?ve got to have a Japanese PS2 to play it. The best rally and other racing games often come out only in Europe, which means you would need a European PS2 to play the games. With the Swap Magic, your USA PS2 will be able to play all of the hottest game titles that will probably never make it this side of the Ocean. And for European gamers that just can?t get enough of the US games, Swap Magic comes in your version too, with a USA, PAL and JAPANESE version of the discs available.

There are various ways of using the Swap Magic disc. A slide card is used for an original Playstation2 console. In a Slim PS2 on the other hand, there are other options that you can also choose from in disc switching. There are numerous websites that offer a number of disc swapping devices and methods which are designed for archive and imported disc play on the PS2. These other methods range from replacing the original top loading lid with a new lid for easy switching to installing a switch that will allow the original lid to open without the system even knowing it.

Although Swap Magic allows legal PS2 game owners to play backed-up/archive copies of their legally acquired discs, Swap Magic also prevents users from making illegal copies. Swap Magic retains the same copy protection systems that the PS2 uses. While there are many versions of Swap Magic on the market, Swap Magic's terms clearly prohibit the illegal copying and use of PS2 game titles. Used responsibly, Swap Magic enables PS2 game owners an extra measure of peace of mind. Swap Magic users can rest assured that when they back up rare or discontinued game titles, the back ups will work as expected.

Protect Yourself From Cell Phone Radiation

With cell phones quickly becoming an important part of our everyday lives, it?s frightening to think that the radiation from cellular phones may cause health problems. Even though claims about the dangers of cell phones are unsubstantiated, that hasn?t stopped various marketers from selling cellular accessories alleging to protect consumers from harmful radiation.

Since cellular phones are a new technology, there are no long term studies to prove or disprove claims about their dangers. Various studies have attempted to link radiation from cell phones to memory problems, fatigue, headaches, and insomnia. Some researchers have also suggested that children who use cellular phones may be at an increased risk for problems since their bodies are not yet fully developed.

There have been many types of cellular accessories that have claimed to protect consumers from dangerous cell phone radiation. The manufacturers of these products have relied on fear and paranoia to market devices with no scientific validity. WaveShield, WaveShield 1000, WaveShield 2000, and other products designed to protect users from cell phone radiation have been proven ineffective. In fact, the Waveshield products were the subject of a 2003 FTC complaint. The main problem with these cellular accessories is that they cover the earpiece of the phone, when the electromagnetic energy that may cause problems comes from the antenna and other internal components.

You don?t need to spend your hard-earned money on cellular accessories to protect against radiation. If you are concerned about the possible harmful effects of cell phone radiation, you can follow FTC recommendations to help protect yourself. The FTC recommends that consumers concerned about radiation limit cell phone use to short conversations, use a hands-free headset, and avoid using cell phones in areas with poor signals. Of course, complete avoidance of cell phones will eliminate any possible risk associated with radiation exposure.

PS3: Will the $499 / $599 Price Tag Hurt the PS3?

As I'm writing this, Sony is still on top of the video game world. With over 100 million PS2's sold, we all have one. I play my PS2 daily and I have a PSP. But after the price announcement at E3 I don't know if I'll be able to afford to stay with Sony on the next-gen bandwagon. A $499 price tag means that if you ask for that for Christmas 2006 then THATS ALL YOU'RE GETTING! No action figures, no clothes, nothing else but the PS3.

And then tack on a game or two to that and you're looking at asking your mom and dad to shell out almost $700 for your Christmas. i don't think Sony is looking at who their core market is. The PS3 is now like buying a Lexus. It looks nice on the outside. It has pretty games, but are they going to be that fun out of the gate? And with the new Dual Shake controller which from reports was added two weeks before E3, will it be all that? Or are we buying into a over-priced lemon?

So if you want a PS3 you better start saving ALL your pennies, beg your mom daily, and start eating cheese and crackers for lunch.

Sony's top guy, Ken Kutaragi, even goes as far to say It's probably too cheap.

Here are his words of wisdom, as translated by consumer website IGN:

This is the PS3 price. Expensive, cheap ? we don't want you to think of it in terms of game machines. Because the PS3 is like nothing else.

For instance, is it not nonsense to compare the charge for dinner at the company cafeteria with dinner at a fine restaurant? It's a question of what you can do with that game machine. If you can have an amazing experience, we believe price is not a problem.

When we announced the PlayStation price, it was said to be expensive. Same for the PlayStation 2. However, when released, both had sales that were unthinkable for previous game machines. This is because both offered experiences that could not be had on previous game machines.

With the PS3, you can have next generation game experiences that could previously not be experienced ? things like next generation graphics and various services via the network. And, as with the PS and PS2, we believe people who like games will, without question, purchase it.

So let us know what you think? Do you think the PS3 is over priced? Will you get one at launch or will you wait until the price has gone down alot?

Voice Stress Analysis: Real & Viable Consumer Technology For Truth Verification For Everyday Use

Voice Stress Analysis: Real & viable consumer technology for truth verification...for everyday use

... OR Promoting greater truth and honesty is important to most relationships. Biometrics can help... a lot...

-Is the other person who you think is your loyal friend or companion really honest with you?

-Is the other person really who you think they are?

-What if you have a way to sense 'deceit' so no one could lie to you anymore??

Voice stress analysis (VSA) is a very real, viable and applicable technology for truth verification ...for everyday use. Why? - Because it is effective in separating the less stressful act of being truthful, from all the other 'grey' responses. It filters 'all the good guys' out from the 'rest' - for example, those innocent of insurance fraud or a crime. Furthermore:

-VSA technology has always been accessible to anyone on the Internet; It's just technically 'messy' going from an audio recording to viewing/hearing the selective results.

-VSA is a reliable truth verifier vs. perfect 'lie-detector per se, as such responses' are sometimes caused by other emotions such as confusion, unwillingness, etc.

-VSA can help act as a 'sixth' sense ... weeding out most responses as being truthful and sincere (the silence)... relieving any doubt of their honesty and integrity - GOOD NEWS

-VSA alerts are cause for concern in any case. While it may not always indicate a deceitful lie, it indicates some stressful condition causing the reaction - deceit or confusion, attention, anger, excitement, unwillingness, etc. - all possibly important to know or find out further - CONCERN, it could well be a lie. All muscles in the body, including the vocal chords, vibrate in the 8 to 12 Hz range....This is known to be caused by the production and release of a chemical, as explained in the Scientific American Article Psychological Tremor Vol. 224, No. 3, 1971.

-Some people have higher stress and some have low, and averages change from day to day along with mood. What all people have in common is that their stress levels are constantly changing within their current range - changes which indicate the perceived jeopardy or danger of statements being made. A lie is often dangerous, humiliating, or injurious to get caught at, so lies tend to stand out on stress measurements

-In moments of stress, like when you tell a lie that you dare not get caught at, the body prepares for fight or flight by increasing the readiness of its muscles to spring into action. Their vibration increases from the relaxed 8 to 9 Hz, to the stressful 11 to 12 Hz range. -It's not the 'lie' itself, but the fear, unease or other emotional stress about a 'deceitful lie', that causes the visual or audio alerts in voice stress and voice emotional analysis.

-A person with no compunction could tell extensive casual lies to these programs with no response - as is evident in testing with 'mock' scenarios. But when the same person talks of significant matters, these programs detects the stress.

VSA consumer applications include public freeware like TruthVSA3 (Windows), Prevaricator (Windows), LiarLiar (Linux) and ShakyVoice (PPC). Or, you can also purchase software like Ex-Sense (windows), Fortress (Windows - 'abandonware'), LieSpy (Nokia only), KishKish (Skype), or X13-VSA (Windows) ? all available on the Internet.

You do it all yourself or use a service, but the most critical issue for good feedback is a good audio recording of your subjects' responses. There are some simple, but very important guidelines to follow:

-Relaxed, Non-threatening Atmosphere: (less controlled environments)

-No 'Mock' Testing: Never attempt to apply testing in 'mock' (made-up) scenarios (i.e. never ask how the subject feels in an 'imagined' situation)

-Take a positive approach: Apply the overall approach with the PRIMARY intention of confirming that your subject is not deceitful when making a statement or responding to a question; Candid recording is best; Next best is cleverly staging in questions and answers

-Matters of 'significance': Ask questions or initiate conversation on matters of significance that elicit emotional responses (for example, their opinion on a controversial subject); Record 5-15 brief, to the point statements; If possible, ask at least one question that might be a lie

-ALWAYS be aware of the law in your own state: Laws vary state to state. In most states, including California, you can record and analyze people as long as they give consent. Elsewhere, it's legal to run an analysis if only one party to the conversation - you, rather than your subject - consents to the taping It starts with just making an audio recording. VOIP users only need software for that ? others need call / sound recording software and a phone pick-up (or a tape recorder). Then process your recording and analyze it for truth(s) or anomalies (stress or lies); Consider using 2-3 free VSA programs for comparison.

The power to leverage consumer VSA technology for your benefit, to verify truth, is now in your hands. All the software is on the Net (most of it free) and you know the basic guidelines to producing 'good' responses (ones that gives real insight).

Vibration Analysis

Vibration analysis is becoming more and more well-known as a prognostic maintenance procedure as well as a support for machinery maintenance judgment and decisions. Generally, machines don't fail, malfunction, or break down without showing some symptoms or warning, which is often shown by an amplified level of vibration. To find out the nature and harshness of the machine flaw, and to therefore predict the failure of the machine or equipment, vibration measurement and analysis should be conducted.

A machine has an overall vibration signal that comes from the several components and structures infused into it. Mechanical problems, however, create distinctive vibrations at varying frequencies. And these defects as well as the natural frequencies of different structural elements can be diagnosed by analyzing the frequency and time range and employing signal processing skills.

Since vibration analysis deals with all moving components of any kind of rotating device, it can point out not just particular machine troubles but can also make repairs simpler by spotting the origin or root cause of the problem. And most significantly, vibration analysis is capable of discovering the flaws before they become evident. Hence, you will be warned of budding equipment problems, and you can allow your engineers or technicians to be ready for repairs and to make the repairs at a convenient time rather than during emergency situations.

Vibration analysis, which is done through a vibration analyzer, and some skill, can help a person point out the causes of coarse and irregular machinery conditions. Vibration analysis systems are really helpful for modal analysis and vibration testing.

When it comes to analysis requirements, vibration analysis is complicated and calls for human experience and capability. Nevertheless, it is an inexpensive and functional diagnostic means to guarantee a smoothly running machine.

Vibration Testing provides detailed information on Random Vibration Testing, Shock And Vibration Testing, Vibration Analysis, Vibration Control and more. Vibration Testing is affiliated with Wire EDM Machines.

Wirelesss Networking Security: 5 Reasons to Use a Radius Server

1. Wireless Authentication - This is a huge part of why wireless networking is so secure, you know exactly who is accessing your LAN. With out a RADIUS Server anyone who has happened upon your passpharse has open access to your WLAN. IF someone steals your passphrase some how they won?t be able to access your lan because they still need user creditials.

2. Wireless Policy - You can set any number of policies you like but my favorite is limiting the time and days that users can access the wireless network. Most often if a hacker is going to try and crack your network it?s going to be at night, so don?t let users authenticate at night or on the weekends.

3. DMZ or Subnet - You can assign wireless clients to a subnet that is locked down or keep them in a DMZ. If a hacker starts probing the network he won?t be able to see much.

4. Limit Access time - You can limit your access time of wireless clients. If a hacker can?t hack the LAN he might try to hack the wireless clients, kick idol users off after couple hours.

5. Per user or group Control - You can give specific users certain access or you can give whole groups different access policies. A common senerio is that you have contractors or out of town sales employees visiting and need temporary access to the wireless network. You won?t want to let them have the same access that the normal employees do so limit them as needed.

I will be posting a tutorial soon about how to setup a wireless RADIUS server

Bluray Name: Can Misspelling Blueray Hurt Blueray?

We have noticed that there is a lot of confusion about blu-ray (Blue-ray) spelling. Almost 50% of all Blu-ray searches in Google are done with Blue-ray or Blueray. And within the misspelled searches, Blue-ray is about 80% and Blueray is the other 20%. The numbers from Overture for july are 26708 searches for Blu-ray compared to 8618 for Blue-ray and 1082 for Bluray.

It was a choice made by the Blu-ray disc association to remove the e from blue-ray to be able to have a trademark on it. Blue-ray disc or Blueray disc would have not been so easy. We are wondering if people are searching half the time with Blue-ray players or Blue-ray movies or even worse HD DVD vs. Blue-ray, if they are going to find what they are looking for? They will find results talking about blu-ray, but it is going to be limited because of the pollution done by sites that have misspelled blu-ray themselves with blue-ray or blueray.

Google and the other search engines can make the translation between blue-ray and blu-ray or blueray and blu-ray but it is certainly going to hurt the search result. The did you mean could have helped but websites writers are doing so much mistakes that there is enough results for Blue-ray that the did you mean doesn't pop-up.

An ad by a major retail store in the newspapers last week was announcing the Samsung Blue-ray player! Talk about confusing people! All those people that did not knew about the technology are now convinced that the correct spelling is Blue-ray and not Blu-ray. They just run to their computer now and search for Blue-ray and find enough results just like if it was the correct spelling.

Understanding the Vicious Circle of Complexity

The number of lines of communications grow exponentially based on the number of people involved in a project. - Bryce's Law

INTRODUCTION

In an earlier bulletin, I discussed the various types of information resources found in an information system, the average number of each resource, along with the number of design decisions associated with each; see:

No. 10 - Managing Design Complexity
http://www.phmainstreet.com/mba/ss050207.pdf

The issue of managing complexity is not simple. As our information systems continue to grow in magnitude, so do the costs associated with maintaining and updating them to suit the current requirements of the company. Today's systems have grown into such uncontrollable behemoths that companies either elect to outsource them (thereby transferring the headache to someone else), let them run unchecked in end-users departments (whereby data and process redundancies run rampant), or they try to rewrite the system in its entirety (aka, a Mission Impossible project).

Compounding the problem of complexity is a vicious circle phenomenon that occurs during development projects. This circle is actually quite simple to understand and explain:

  • First, we start with a simple system.

  • Inevitably, changing user information requirements trigger a need to change the system.

  • To implement the change, more pieces and parts (resources) are required.

  • The change requires new or different people to implement it.

  • Due to inconsistencies in development (lack of standards), each developer is allowed to implement their piece of the puzzle as they see fit. Consequently, communications suffers thereby hindering development time.

  • Poor communications makes the overall system less manageable which adds to the problem of complexity whereby we become dependent on people to maintain different pieces of the system.

This results in a vicious circle whereby complexity is compounded with every development project. Instead of our systems becoming easier to manage, they are becoming much more complicated. So much so, no one person can visualize the system in its entirety.

    UNDERSTANDING COMMUNICATIONS

To truly understand how communications compounds complexity, let's begin by understanding the number of lines of communications between people. Interestingly, the number of lines of communications grow exponentially based on the number of people involved. For example:

    Number of People: 2
    Lines of Communications: 1

    Number of People: 3
    Lines of Communications: 3

    Number of People: 4
    Lines of Communications: 6

    Number of People: 5
    Lines of Communications: 10

As if maintaining the number of lines of communications isn't enough, we must consider the content of the communications. Even if our lines of communications are well maintained, if there are no standards in terms of terminology and work effort, a Tower of Babel effect will result whereby developers trip over each other in an uncoordinated manner. Without standardization, systems become more difficult to maintain and modify, thereby compounding the complexity problem.

    CONCLUSION

The failure of the ability of one person to handle the relationships of the entire system is due partially to the complexity of the system and partially to our failure to develop concepts which enables us to impose structure on this complexity. Because of this lack of structure, the designer cannot communicate properly with the user in defining requirements or in relating a solution for these requirements. The designer cannot properly communicate with the programmers and ultimately with the people who will be using, modifying and maintaining the system after it has been developed. In fact, the programmer cannot properly communicate with the computer due to the unstructured nature of requirements and the complexity of the processes needed to implement large systems.

Finally, this difficulty in communications manifests itself in the unreliability of each information resource in a system. As we have more and more interconnected resources, so that the failure of any resource results in the failure of the whole system, the reliability of each resource must increase, rather than decrease, in order to prevent the entire system from failing. Needless to say, the more complex the system, the less likely it is that each of its resources will be more reliable when they are developed from difficult-to-communicate requirements that are implemented in difficult-to-communicate code.

In one sense, we are looking for a solution analogous to the Industrial Revolution when there was the transition of a cottage industry to the industrial enterprise. To do so requires standardization of terminology and basic development concepts. Without such standardization, large systems will continue to grow in complexity. But with standardization and some commonsense management, not only can we begin to reduce the level of complexity, we can turn systems development from an art to a science.

The New iPod Nano More Than Just MusicToGo

Let?s talk music! Let?s talk podcasts!
1,000 songs, non-skip, digital quality, portability - the pencil thin iPod Nano is just the ticket. Jogging, walking or toughing it out on a treadmill life just got a whole lot easier with the addition of the rugged, little iPod that holds either 500 (2GB) or 1000 (4GB) songs. That?s 14 hours of sounds that will go with you everywhere.

So what have I done with mine?
I work two hours from home via the public bus and regional rail lines. I get up at 5:00AM, catch a 6:35AM train, after a jostling pushing bus-ride, coffee on the regional rails, then another jostling, jolting bus ride to get to work by 8AM. I couldn?t do it without music ? and I couldn?t make it without my rugged little iPod. It holds my sounds, a few photos of my feline, furry buddies sound asleep at home, a couple audiobooks and my podcasts of various things that interest me.

Portability in the extreme What makes this tiny 3.5 x 1.6 x 0.27 inch stand out? It?s thin, weighs only 3.5 ounces, yet it backs quite a punch. Using the Click Wheel, you have access to your music, photos, podcasts, extras like a calendar and contacts, a World Clock and many extras On-the-go Options where you can create custom playlists personalized to exactly the songs you want to listen to at that moment.

    Photos of the cool cats
I only have a few photos of family, friends and my many felines, but the Nano can actually hold up to 25,000 photos. Now that?s a lot of picnics, baby showwers and weddings to pass around the office! You can also set it up show a slideshow of your favorite shots.

    Easy Sync with iTunes
Through iTunes, the premiere iPod syncing software that works on Mac or PC, you import a CD easily, buy songs or podcasts from the iTunes store sync or upload it to your iPod. iTunes starts syncing automatically after hooking up your iPod. Instant music to go, as well as news and commentary on any subject you like. I like the Audiobooks section for those long rides which has over 11,000 titles. Prices start at just $2.95 per title, Songs are only 99 cents. Syncing is blindingly easy and you can start building your own library of audiobooks ? a number of them available exclusively at the iTunes Music Store including the all six Harry Potter audiobooks.

    Let?s Accessorize!
With all new things comes the upgrades and gizmos to customize the new toy to perfectly fit your tastes and preferences. iPod Nano is no different offering a wide-variety of earphone choices, many colored skins to make you Nano uniquely yours. I prefer the powder-blue skin myself, and the In-Ear Headphones for maximum sound quality and bass resonance.

You car is a stereo on the roll!
Many of the newer cars come iPod capable with the hookups necessary, but since I have an older model vehicle I?ve done the conventional iTrip and plug-in car Monster option. Either way, it allows you to take you music with you on the road with ?seamless integration between you car and your iPod.? In other words, fabulous sounds while you drive.

    Imagine this scenario.
You stumble out of your bed in the dark, take care of personal business. Now you?re dressed and ready to go. It?s still dark. Out you go, heading towards the local bus stop, still near-comatose. You take out your earbuds, turn on the Nano and wham, music fills your world or the latest Battlestar Galactica podcast about the last gripping episode fills your consciousness. You begin to wake up, ready to face the day on your terms with kick-ass background music or scintillating commentary to make your trip to consciousness just a little bit easier.

You don't like my scenario? Dream up your own. Just make sure you have music in it, because everything moves, slides, walks, and treads better to a beat ? whatever your beat ? whether it?s classical, new age or rock and roll. It's gone digital, all wrapped up in a cute, little box that takes your songs to the next level and beyond. When you think music, think iPod Nano.

    Content Management System

A content management system is a computer software system for organizing and facilitating collaborative creation of documents and other content. The term content management system is usually used in its abbreviated form cms.

The cms is frequently a web application used for managing websites and web content, though in many cases, content management systems require special client software for editing and constructing articles. The content management systems were initially developed internally at content publishing organizations.

CNET spun out its internal development offerings into a separate company called Vignette in 1995. The company started offering the software as a web based content management system, allowing sites to create templates of the presentation of their content on the web.

A consulting company, Pencom Web Works in 1998, introduced the Metaphoria Data Transformation Server, allowing java developers to write applications that would be tied with content and target the content output to different channels. The product failed but the concepts that were introduced by it made their way into most ancient content management systems.

Many companies in the early 2000s began offering weblog software, which brought many of the concepts surrounding content management systems to the masses. Six Apart, with the release of their Movable Type quickly established itself as a leader in this field.

    Types of content management systems:

?web content management system or web site content management system is a type of content management system software used for managing websites. The software assists in automating various aspects of web publishing and manages content for distribution on a web server.

?learning content management system or lcms assists in managing the web-based learning content life cycle.

?document imaging systems or dis are also generally considered under the family of general content management.

?enterprise content management or ecm is the software technology that enables organizations to create/capture, manage/secure, store/retain/destroy, publish/distribute, search, personalize, and present/view/print digital content such as pictures/images, text, reports, video, audio, transactional data, catalog, code. The ecm systems primarily focus on the capture, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of digital files for enterprise use and their life-cycle management. The ecm concept is not restricted to web based technologies but includes client/server and host based solutions.

?Transactional content management system assists in managing e-commerce transactions.

?Integrated content management system assists in managing enterprise documents and content.

?Publication management system assists in managing the publications (manuals, books, help, guidelines, references) content life cycle.

Tips to Protect Your PC Files from External Attack

Essential to peace of mind is protecting the PC and your online privacy. When connected to the web, your work and data is open to attacks of various kinds including harmful downloads. A simple game, picture, or program may be the vehicle for malevolence. So, you need to check whether every file that you download, open, or save, is safe or whether there are irregularities of any kind.

    Protect your PC by:

?Blocking hackers and viruses by installing the latest firewall and antivirus software. It is advisable to install a software firewall even if you have a hardware firewall in your system. A software firewall is designed to query whether or not it should permit ?X,? access. The user can specify which applications can access the port and which cannot. A bi-directional firewall such as ZoneAlarm3 and Personal Firewall 5 will monitor both inbound and outbound traffic preventing Trojans and backdoor programs from functioning.

?Block downloads that install unwanted programs by using the options in Internet explorer to block all software from source X specified by you.

?Install software programs that will constantly scan your PC for spyware, adware, dialers, and web bug traces which can create a nuisance and cause crashes, slow down systems, or steal financial information. By adding a schedule you can instruct NoAdware to automatically scan your PC at set times for in-filtrations.

?Immunize your PC and prevent malicious add ons to your system.

?Configure your PC browser to protect you when you are working online. Use a ?real time shield? and prevent intrusions. Be sure to click the ?protect IE Favorites? box and ensure that no thief can add an URL without your permission to your browser?s favorites list. This will block offensive and dangerous websites from entering your PC environs.

?Say ?no? to any web address or site that instructs you to download specific software to view their pages. Such software can contain a virus, Trojan horse, or auto dialer.

?Create a regular back up schedule for your work. Once a week is ideal if you are a virtual worker or running a business. This will minimize any damage should problems arise.

?Be sure to update your software with the latest patches and bug fixes. Then use the updated or enhanced security settings provided by the updates. There are in built ways which you can operate to block damaging viruses, stamp out cookies, and keep unwanted visitors away from your computer system. The method is easy for example if you are using Internet Explorer just go to Tools-Internet Options-Privacy tab. Click the edit button to accept or reject a specific cookie. Go to the advanced settings and check block third party cookies.

?Scan all downloaded files before use. Never launch executable or scriptable files namely those that have dot.exe; .bat ;.doc; .vbs extensions. Do not access attachments of any kind before they are certified as safe.

?Remove file sharing and windows printer options these increase vulnerability of the PC.

?Encrypt your e-mail and embed an identifying key.

Better be sure than sorry. Preventing snoops is easier than trying to recover after an attack. Take informed steps to protect yourself and your PC.

Installing Linux ? 5 Things To Consider First

Is Linux the way to go?

Well that?s a question that does not have a simple answer. Some people, mostly hardcore gurus, will say ?Yes it sure is!? but believe it or not there are people who still like Windows.

When it comes to deciding between installing Linux instead of Windows (or any other operating system) you must keep various things in mind. Below is a list of the five key things you need to consider before choosing.

    1. Is this going to be used as a desktop or server system? ? Linux has been primarily used in the mainstream server world as web and ftp servers. There are many types of servers that you can run with Linux such as DHCP (BOOTP in Linux terms), directory services (LDAP), and many more.

    2. What software is going to run on this computer? ? There are many applications that still have not been written for Linux. Check with your software vendor before installing Linux to see if they have a version of their software that will work.

    3. Are you going to be playing games? ? As with other software, there are lots of games that have not be ported over to Linux. If you are really into a certain game and it does not exist in a Linux version you might want to consider staying with Windows.

    4. What is your level of computer knowledge? ? Since Linux is completely different than Windows you will probably have to learn everything from scratch. Things such as installing software, booting up, and deleting files are completely different. If you are not willing to take some time to learn a new operating system then you may want to steer clear.

    5. What is the price? ? Well with Linux there are two price ranges, free and not so free. The main idea behind Linux is the ?Open Source? concept. This basically means that the code of the operating system is free to use, distribute, and modify at your will. This is good because most Linux distributions are free. It also means that companies can package and sell it under their own name. Ordinarily if you want to go with Linux you should stick with the free versions.

After you have considered these five questions you should have a good idea of whether or not to install Linux on your computer. The main benefit of Linux is that there are tons of free versions out there. Over the past few years Linux, in general, has grown quite well and there are many resources, on the web, where you can find information, explanations, and tutorials on just about anything to do with it.

How a Bug Challenges to a Software Professional

It is really interesting that a bug can create problem for a learned person even the bug is not alive. One day my one friend was working and a bug created much problem. It was not easy to track the bug. evrytime bug was challenging any other different problem.

What is bug : When there is a defect in a software program, we call it a bug. If we start the product and it crashes, there is a bug. If one find a typo in the help system, that's considered a bug too. The report which is about software problem is called software problem report (SPR), which is the same as a bug report.

What is bug tracking: A bug tracking system is designed to track the bug. It is considered as a database. The bug tracking may be homegrown or it may be a commercial system. In any case, a bug is entered as a record in the database, where it can be assessed and tracked. The user interface for bug tracking usually consist of navigable views and forms for editing existing bug reports or writing new ones. In bug tracking a unique login ID and password is provided to every user. When a user writes a bug, adds comments or changes a status field, a good bug tracking system will log the ID of the person, creating or amending the record. That is the way a true history of a bug report for bug tracking is maintained. One of the most important feature of bug tracking is keyword searching. For example while saving a file any user finds a crash bug. The bug tracking system software should have the facility to perform a keyword search on crash and file.

The Benefits of Online Audio Conferencing

Audio conferencing used to be limited to telephones and televisions. In that setting, one group would get together in one room and audio conference with another group, who are located in another room (and most likely in another city or country.) The two groups could hear each other, and in most cases, see and interact with each other?s software.

Now, with the ubiquitous proliferation of the Internet, online audio and web conferencing is taking the place of telephone technology. With online audio conferencing, individual users can meet electronically. Each person is equipped with special headsets that have microphones and earphones and web cams for feeding their image to the rest of the participants. Also, computers involved in a web-conference can be networked so that the conference utilizes the full power of every computer. Users or ?seats? can send each other anything from documents to movies to sound files, and offer the material for modification.

Anyone can engage in audio and web conferencing. All you need is a computer, a current web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, a phone, and an internet connection of 56 kbps or faster (that?s 56 kilobytes per second ? your typical cable or DSL connection.) You then download and subscribe to any of a number of web conferencing software services, sometimes for as little as $0.15 per seat per minute.

A special Internet-supported phone system called VoIP can be used instead of a regular phone connection. This software program allows you to talk over the Internet as if it were a regular telephone, but without the massive long-distance charges of regular phones. You do have to buy a headset for this, but it?s peanuts compared to long distance charges over time.

For additional fees, you can also add recording, archiving, registration, event planning, operator assistance, and more.

The benefits of online audio and web conferencing are immense. You save on long-distance phone time, travel expense, and time spent organizing the conference.

Scheduling software has come a long way since the early days of Microsoft Outlook and Palm Desktop. There are now open source alternatives that are freely available and in many ways as powerful as and in some cases more powerful than their expensive proprietary competitors. Linux users have seen the growth of the Gnome-based calendaring and scheduling software ?Evolution? while cross platform open source software enthusiasts have enjoyed the releases of Sunbird and Thunderbird from the Mozilla Foundation?s popular code base.

Developers have been paying attention to the Microsoft-dominated personal information management software realm. The software giant out of Redmond, Washington has recently released Outlook Live, which is available as a subscription service that is subscribed to on a yearly basis. The Outlook live service aims to provide a seamless and transparent user experience through the use of a reworked version of their award winning Outlook 2003 PIM client software that has the native ability to handle multiple calendars and built in connectivity and synchronization with the popular MSN website?s feature set (such as the nearly ubiquitous MSN Hotmail services). If you find yourself needing access to your data 2 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year no matter where you are in the world (as long as you have access to an internet connected computer with a compatible web browser installed (Internet Explorer for those of you out there keeping score).

Wireless Networking Part 1: Capabilities and Hardware

Wireless Networking, Part 1: Capabilities and Hardware

These days it isn?t uncommon for a home to have multiple personal computers, and as such, it just makes sense for them to be able to share files, as well as to share one Internet connection. Wired networking is an option, but it is one that may require the installation and management of a great deal of wiring in order to get even a modestly sized home set up. With wireless networking equipment becoming extremely affordable and easy to install, it may be worth considering by those looking to build a home network, as well as by those looking to expand on an existing wired network.

The first installment in this two-part series of Tech Tips will provide an introduction to the basic capabilities and hardware involved in wireless networking. Once that foundation has been established, we?ll take a look at a few setup and security related considerations that should be addressed once the physical installation is complete.

    Capabilities

The basic standard that covers wireless networking is the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers? (IEEE) 802.11, which is close kin to the wired Ethernet standard, 802.3. Many people will recognize 802.11 more readily when accompanied by one of three suffixes (a, b, or g), used to specify the exact protocol of wireless networking.

The 802.11a protocol first hit the scene in 2001, and despite a small surge in recent popularity, it is definitely the least common of the three at this time. The signals are transmitted on a 5 GHz radio frequency, while ?b? and ?g? travel on 2.4 GHz. The higher frequency means that the signal can travel less distance in free space and has a harder time penetrating walls, thus making the practical application of an 802.11a network a bit limited. The maximum transfer rate, however, is roughly 54 Mbps, so it makes up for its limited range with respectable speed.

As mentioned, 802.11b and 802.11g networks operate on a 2.4 GHz radio band, which gives a much greater range as compared to 802.11a. One downside to being on the 2.4 GHz band is that many devices share it, and interference is bound to be an issue. Cordless phones and Bluetooth devices are two of many items that operate at this frequency. The range of these two protocols is about 300 feet in free air, and the difference between the two comes down to speed. 802.11b came first, released back in 1999, and offers speeds up to 11 Mbps. 802.11g first appeared in 2002 and it is a backwards compatible improvement over 802.11b and offers speeds up to 54 Mbps.

On top of these protocols, some manufacturers have improved upon the 802.11g standard and can provide speeds of up to 108 Mbps. This doesn?t involve a separate protocol, but just a bit of tweaking in areas like better data compression, more efficient data packet bursting, and by using two radio channels simultaneously. Typically, stock 802.11g equipment is not capable of these speeds, and those interested need to shop for matched components that specify 108 Mbps support. I say ?matched components? as this is not a standard protocol and the various manufacturers may take different approaches to achieving these speeds. In order to ensure the best results when trying to achieve these elevated speeds, components from the same manufacturer should be used together. For instance, only Netgear brand network adaptors rated for 108 Mbps data transfer should be used with something like the Netgear WG624 wireless router (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=WGT624NAR).

Considering your typical broadband Internet connection is going to offer data transfer rates of 10 Mbps or less, it can be seen that even 802.11b would be more than adequate if you just want to surf the web. Sharing files on your LAN (Local Area Network) is where the faster protocols will really make a difference, and comparing the prices of 802.11b and 802.11g components may show that there is little to no difference in selecting a ?g? capable device over a comparable ?b? capable device.

    Hardware

Access Point ? Wireless Access Point (WAP) is the central device that manages the transmission of wireless signals on a network. A base access point may be capable of handling up to 10 connections, and more robust APs may be able to manage up to 255 connections simultaneously. The D-Link DWL-1000AP+ (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=37) is an example of a wireless access point capable of 802.11b transmissions.

Router ? In somewhat technical terms, a router is a network device that forwards data packets. It is generally the connection between at least two networks, such as two LANs, or a LAN and ISP?s (Internet Service Provider?s) network. For our purposes, and for the sake of simplicity, a wireless router is basically an access point with the added feature of having a port for sharing a broadband Internet connection. The D-Link AirPlus G (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=DI524-R&cat=NET) is an 802.11g capable router that provides access for numerous wireless connections and four hard-wired connections to one WAN (Wide Area Network Internet) connection. A typical router for home use will generally cost less than an access point, and via settings within the firmware, can be used as just an access point anyway. Wired or wireless, all the computers using the router can share files over the network, as well as sharing a broadband internet connection. Communication between wireless computers (or a wireless computer and a wired computer) will max out at 54 Mbps, while communication between wired computers will take full advantage of the 100 Mbps provided via the 802.3 protocol.

Network Adaptor ? A network adaptor is required for every computer that you would like to be connected to the wireless network. Many laptops, such as this Sony Centrino 1.5 GHz (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=PCGZ1RA-R&cat=NBB) now include a wireless adaptor built in, so no extra hardware is needed. For those with systems that don?t have wireless capabilities built in, adding them is fairly simple, and can be done using a variety of connections. Desktop computers can go wireless by adding a PCI slot network adaptor such as the 802.11g capable D-Link DWL-G510 (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=308). Notebook users can easily add wireless connectivity by using a PCMCIA adaptor, such as this 802.11g capable device (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=PBW006-N&cat=NET). And for truly convenient plug-n-play connectivity to wireless networks, USB adaptors such as this 802.11g capable dongle (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=80211GWUD&cat=NET) are available.

Antenna/Extender ? These items are not essential, but given the specifics of a wireless environment, they may be helpful. Devices such as the Hawking Hi-Gain Antenna (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HAI6SIP-N&cat=NET) or the Super Cantenna (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=SCB10&cat=NET) serve the purpose of increasing the wireless signal strength, and therefore extend the range of a given wireless network. Not only can a large area of open space be covered, but the signal quality may be improved in structures with walls and floors that obstruct the signal transmission.

    Final Words

In this Tech Tip, we took a look at the basics of wireless networking as it relates to capabilities and hardware. In the second part of this two-part series, we will look at some of the basic setup and security considerations that should be addressed. The physical installation of a wireless network may be exponentially easier than a wired network, but the more difficult part is setting up the software and security to make sure everything stays up and running without incident.

You Don't Need To Pay For IT!

IT Support has never been such a minefield. With new technologies always entering the marketplace it is now possible to have a corporate-standard IT system without having the financial headache of purchasing a server or even software such as Microsoft Office. For one small monthly payment, companies with 1-50 users can have their whole IT infrastructure based in a secure location, safe in the knowledge that should their office be burgled, damaged or even burned down, the only thing required to be reconnected to your office system and data is a new PC, Laptop, Thin Client or any internet-connected terminal such as in Internet Cafes. This is perfect for disaster recovery.

As your IT system is centrally managed in a safe and secure hosting environment, your IT support requirements are minimal or non-existent due to the power of remote IT support where an IT engineer or technician can actually ?take over? control of your mouse and keyboard actions from anywhere in the world. This is a very crucial factor as you can even be taught and shown how to perform a particular task and it also removes the usual time-delay involved when requiring ?hands-on? IT support. With a remote desktop your life will be much easier.

There are a great many advantages with remotely-hosted IT & network systems and another great benefit is the fact that you can literally work from anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection. You could be working on a train via wireless or 3G, sending and retrieving documents via Blackberry devices or PDAs, catching up with work on the beach, the list is just endless. As access to your data is mobile, you do not have to worry about synchronising data and carrying data on USB flash drives etc, this all saves you time and ultimately money and the freedom and mobility you will gain from such a system will only benefit your company and it?s staff, allowing for home-working and emergency access 24 hours a day.

Microsoft licensing is a major change that has occurred over the past 18 months and it is no longer necessary for companies to spend vast sums of money on hardware, software and server-related network support. In fact, companies no longer have to pay large sums of money for Microsoft Office, Adobe, Kaspersky and a growing list of software suppliers thanks to a change in the way licensing can be paid for. A great benefit of this is that you can pay monthly for a software product and receive free upgrades when new releases or patches become available.

Basic Inkjet Printer Care and Maintenance and Ink Related Troubleshooting

The printer is the one computer component that requires the most attention, though the importance of regular maintenance is often overlooked. Your printer is the single conduit between concept and creation --- the device that brings your virtual media into the physical world.

In this article I will provide tips to maximize your print quality and introduce you to regular maintenance procedures. This information is provided to assist you in consistently producing quality prints and to extend the life of your printer.

Whether you use your ink jet printer frequently or infrequently, to improve and lengthen your printer?s life it is essential to ensure that it is clean, running smoothly and is clog free. It is recommended that you clean your printer thoroughly every 6 months for optimal performance based on how often the printer is used. Also, if you have pets it is a good idea to blow the printer with compressed air from time to time as dust and hair take their toll over time.

Keep in mind that the maintenance processes consumes ink, so only perform it when necessary or swap out your ink with inexpensive cleaning cartridges to conserve your ink levels. The maintenance tools can be accessed through the printer driver or control center. Once the cycle begins it is imperative that you run the complete cycle before restarting the printer.

?Check the Nozzle: Are you experiencing a faint print quality or are certain colors failing to print? You will need to run your nozzle pattern check utility. If the printout still shows gaps you will need to clean the nozzles.

?Clean the Print Heads: If your nozzle check indicates that your print heads are clogged, it will be necessary to run the cleaning utility which removes the blockages. Occasionally it may be necessary to perform the cleaning utility more than once to remove the blockage. Also, some printers have a built in ?deep cleaning? option that you may need to perform.

?Align the Print Heads: If the lines and colors are out of sync or there is banding, it may be necessary to align your print heads. This can be done by choosing the ?alignment? option on your printer?s utility menu.

If cleaning and aligning do not solve your problem, you will have to contact the original manufacturer to assess the cost of the repair. If your printer isn?t covered by a warranty you should weigh the repair cost versus the cost of a new printer. Sometimes a new printer equipped with new cartridges is the most logical alternative.

    Mercury Automated Testing

What?s all this test automation about?

Since the millennium bug there has been an explosion in test automation. The expansion of automated tools from vendors such as Mercury Interactive, IBM Rational, Segue and others has really delivered automated testing into the heart of just about every major organisation in the western world. And this can be seen to continue with new development methodologies such as eXtreme programming which has test automation at the heart of its design.

So why Automate? Well, the major benefits are:

    Speed

Automated tests can run much faster than the manual equivalent, so more testing can be achieved in a smaller time frame. It is not unusual to see regression suites that take two weeks manually reduced to 24 hours with test tools!

    Consistency/repeatability

Automated tests can be repeated over and over and will always perform the test exactly as recorded. Manual testers can easily make mistakes or perform the same test slightly differently when repeated.

    Unattended ? reduce cost

Once developed, the automated testing can be executed unattended overnight, so repeating the testing requires very little resource or cost.

    Audit trail

The tests are stored as automated scripts and the test results are stored for every execution of the tests providing a full audit trail of all testing performed.

    Improved Test Coverage

As the test pack develops, more & more tests can be added and as the execution time is much faster than manual testing and less resource intensive, more testing can be completed, ensuring greater coverage of the application under test.

Free up testers to perform other tasks

If the structured testing is automated, testers will hopefully have more time to perform other types of testing (accessibility, usability, ad-hoc/random testing) which commonly get pushed aside.

Some testing may only be possible with automation

For example how do you manually simulate 5000 concurrent customers performing transactions on your on-line web site?

What types of tools are available?

    Functional/regression automated tools

These tools capture user interaction with the application under test and can then be replayed. However they go beyond this and allow you to data-drive tests, to capture the state of your application whilst performing business processes and provide fully-featured development environments allowing you to manipulate applications in almost any kind of way. Tools such as Mercury?s WinRunner or QuickTest Professional demonstrate the pinnacle of what these kinds of tools are capable of.

    Load/Performance tools

These are used to emulate multiple (concurrent) users performing tasks against your application, for example if your business has an on-line banking system ? how many users can it support? What kind of performance will it deliver under load? Where are the bottlenecks? All of these kinds of questions can be answered using automated load testing tools such as Mercury?s LoadRunner.

    Test Management

Tools such as Mercury?s TestDirector or Quality Center offer Test Management facilities; a central repository to store test requirements, test scripts, execution results and defect tracking, integrating seamlessly with the automated tools such as WinRunner, LoadRunner and QuickTest Pro.

So what are the pitfalls to test automation?

It is easy for these tools to become ?shelfware? as purchasers do not consider the complexity and power of some of these tools. They all share a steep learning curve, so some time and money need to be invested into getting your team up to scratch with the tools.

Some solutions to good automation implementation:

Technical Testers. Ensure your testers have a reasonable grasp of technology, some programming experience would be ideal.

Training, Training, Training. Good training programs are offered for these tools and are well worth the investment. The trainers usually have good project background experience and can demonstrate how the tools should be used and explain the pitfalls.

Hand-holding for the basic infrastructure. Following the training it is well worth getting a consultant in for a few days or weeks to build the basic automated infrastructure, provide on-site training against your application and to develop templates for your team to expand the test automation out from. They can achieve in weeks what could take you months to learn.

Tools such as LoadRunner, WinRunner, QuickTest Pro, TestDirector, Quality Center can provide a great return on investment in the longer term, but to make them effective do invest in training and assistance at the beginning.

Top 5 Reasons To Go Wireless

Wireless networking is 1 of the greatest new computer technologies in terms of convenience. If you're weighing the pros and cons of wireless before taking the leap, here are 5 to put in the pro column.

    #1: No More Wires

Of all the reasons to switch your network to wireless, this is perhaps the most important. Wires are inconvenient, expensive, dangerous, and downright ugly.

No more wires across the floor improves the safety of your home, since it's easy to trip over exposed wires.

The average Ethernet wire doesn't cost much per foot, but it adds up quickly. To run wires between rooms or floors, you have to knock holes in the walls, which might not even be an option for renters.

Plus when you move you don't have the mess of disconnecting all the wires only to re-connect them at the other end. Nor do you have to examine every wire for damage if your internet connection goes down.

    #2: Internet Access For All

Wireless networking gives you a cheap, easy way to share 1 internet connection among multiple computers. You can add new computers to your network simply by plugging in a wireless card and switching them on -- they get an internet connection immediately!

    #3: Share Files And Printers

A wireless network gives you access to your files wherever you are, and makes it easy to synchronize the data of a laptop and a desktop computer. It's much easier to send files between computers with a wireless network than by email, or CD.

Plus, with the printer connected, you can also write things wherever you happen to be, press print, and go collect them from a printer connected to another computer. Printers plugged into 1 of the network's computers are shared by all the computers automatically.

    #4: Always ON

Broadband revolutionized networking with internet connections being continuously connected -- no need to dial in every time. Wireless networking lets network connections be always-on, so any of your computers can connect to the internet whenever you want. Take laptops from room to room or out on the deck -- they'll have an internet connection. Plus, there's no need for excessive password entry.

    #5: Freedom!

With wireless networking, you can even take your computer wherever the signal reaches. Going wireless is much like the switching from the old fashioned wall-mounted telephone to a cellular phone. The freedom is exhilarating.

Should You Upgrade Your Hardware PC?

What if you found that your computer is out of date? You probably want to upgrade your computer since you have no choice to do so. Your works depend on your hardware computer upgrade. That?s how you going to have a good result.

But before you make any further step, try to learn about your computer. Search all options and ask for advice. Only after this you can go and buy a new component. It?s also useful to check if you really need an upgrade.

Sure, it?s not funny if you keep your old computer but you still loose data when you do your works. Its just a matter of time before you experience a hard drive problem when you still using your old computer. You dont want to loose your data, right? Of course most people only think of backing up their data after they experience a problem. Don't set yourself up for a data loss disaster. Check what hardware you need for your computer.

If you have problem with your hard disk, such as crash when you do your work, better you have it renewed. Most people upgrade their hard disk to increase the size so that they can use it for games, movies and playing a lot of music. A 20 GB hard drive is sufficient to keep new office and internet applications, and all your files and data. A medium sized hard drive would be around 40 GB and the maximum would be around 60 ? 80 GB.

You can choose which perfect for your work. Of course the price is also depending on the capacity of your hard disk. If you are a gamer, you may want to have high capacity hard disk such as that 60-80 GB. But if you just used it for your writing, a 20 GB is more than enough.

Another hardware you may need to upgrade is the RAM or Random Access Memory. This memory keeps data that is being worked on now and may or may not be transferred to the hard drive that represents the long-term memory of the computer. Current processors can perform an enormous number of operations per second. Almost all computer have 64 MB RAM and often 128 MB. If you want to run newer applications on your PC then you must upgrade to 128/256 MB RAM. A lot of people who upgrade from 98 to Win 2000 discover that their computers lock up very often. This is because they don't have enough RAM.

So, those are only some part of hardware you might want to upgrade. There are others such as motherboard, CPU or port which you can upgrade. Your action depend on your need.
